im a postman from the south west, so with whats going on with the alarming rate of dog bits too posties , it is happening to kids and pets as well.
My 16 yr old son was taking our family dog for a walk on the green just by where we live, which I might add is next to a children’s pay area. He had only just got onto the edge of the green when a large Rottweiler came out of nowhere and picked up our dog and proceeded to shake him violently. I must stress my dog was on the lead and the other was not. My son then saw the owner who called his dog to get off but the dog carried on regardless. The owner of the Rottweiler had to grab his collar and roll him over in order to make him release its grip.
To cut a long story short we rushed our dog to the vets. He had two very deep puncture wounds, one just missing his heart. The vet said he was very lucky to be alive. He also had a broken jaw from the excessive shaking and damaged muscle/tissue on his front leg which has left him with a limp.
Laws need to change in order for innocent, responsible pet owners and their pets to be protected. The government needs to look at how these sorts of attacks are on the increase. The vet told us that these attacks are getting more and more common and at least 2 or 3 small dogs are being brought in that have been attacked by large breeds, usually Rottweiler’s, staffys and GSD’s every week. The government need to impose new laws to ensure this trend does not continue. Why can’t it be compulsory that every owner of a dog has to have a licence and pet insurance? The government could charge a nominal fee for the licence which then brings money into the government which could be used to fund any dogs that need kennelling and rehoming etc. This money could also be used to employ more dog wardens. We have one in our town which seems ludicrous. As for the insurance side of it, dogs should have to be insured just like cars. If they are to be on public grounds they should be insured so that if they cause any damage or indeed attack another animal or person they are insured for this. As with car insurance, any dog owners found without insurance should be given an instant fine. If fined more than once they should be banned from owning dogs. Why can’t it be made compulsory that all dogs should be on leads and in control at all times? If they are found to be off the lead and cause damage to anything, whether it be property, person or another animal they are liable and could have their dogs taken off them. If I let my children run loose and attack other children, or damage anything I would soon be prosecuted wouldn’t I?? There needs to be more done and better legislation in place to prevent these things happening.
It is becoming a trend for youths to own powerful dogs like Rottweiler’s or Staffordshire bull terriers. They walk them in the streets with no lead and train them to attack. Until the law changes things will only get worse....

all dogs have potential to bite. I do not understand what you mean, as said a child I know was savaged by a lassie type. Do you have a problem with rotty's? I have a problem with ALL dogs, unless I know them, but had a close shave by a friends GSD called Joe, he went for me ,but just missed my face.
