A postman has told how he thought he was “going to die” during a terrifying dog attack.

The 46-year-old almost lost his leg after suffering serious injuries during the mauling at a house in Sompting earlier this year.

Last month he was forced to retire from his daily round and is now seeking compensation from the Royal Mail.

The postman, who did not want to be named, has had to undergo therapy after experiencing panic attacks and nightmares since his ordeal.

He said: “It was just a normal round on a normal day. I knocked on the front door of the house and I could hear a dog scratching and barking at the side gate.

“A woman came to the door and the dog went silent. I asked where it had gone but suddenly it bounded out of the front door.”

As the terrified postman turned to run, the Alsatian sank its teeth into his calf and knocked him to the ground.

It began to shake its head ferociously from side to side, tearing flesh from bone.

The postman said: “I looked down and all I could see was its massive head and a pool of my own blood. I was sure I was going to die.”

The postman was rushed to hospital where doctors told him he was in danger of losing his leg. Part of his calf had been ripped away, leaving injuries which needed three operations to repair.


He said: “The doctor lifted my blanket and told me my leg looked like something out of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

“I was in agony – I have never known anything like it.”

After ten days in hospital and four months off work, the postman tried to return to his round in June – but the attack had left him with chronic pain and a permanent limp.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Our main aim is to always prevent attacks. If we feel that there is a risk from a dog, or any other animal, at an individual address, we are committed to working with the customer to agree simple steps to ensure we can deliver the mail safely. “

When the dog was barking he was safe it was behind a gate - it came from a different direction, and he was leaving when it attacked.

i was attacked by three alsations a few weeks back . was trying to get my new golf buggy through a gate and as i gave up fighting with the trolley and turned round there was a alsation in front of me . then the stupid woman customer opened the door and 2 more dogs got out .. was not realy hurt but was given a real scare TO ALL GUYS/ POSTIES OUT THERE DOG ATTACKS ARE NOT FUNNY.... EVER....i think a little sympathy should be given to the postie for nearly losing his leg...
