The CWU has reaffirmed the union's commitment to fight disability discrimination following a hard-hitting report by the UK's statutory human rights watchdog released this week accusing public bodies of "collective denial" over the issue.
A 236-page report - Hidden in plain sight: Inquiry into disability-related harassment - concludes that so widespread is this harassment that people with disabilities have come to expect it as part of their normal life.
The study, which was carried out by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), highlights Home Office statistics, which record that almost two million disabled people were victims of crime in the year to April 2010. But, this figure, although relatively high, does not include harassment such as verbal abuse and neighbourhood intimidation.
After speaking to police forces, local authorities' social, education and housing departments and a range of other public-service providers right across the country, and looking in detail at 10 particularly acute case studies, the EHRC concluded that there is evidence of a "systemic failure" to protect disabled people and argues that UK society needs a "cultural shift" in order to properly address this.
Adding the CWU's voice to those MPs, disability rights organisations and national newspapers who have strongly supported the EHRC's call, the union's national equality officer Linda Roy said: "As a union the CWU is committed to ending discrimination and harassment inside and outside the workplace.
"We condemn those responsible for abusing, bullying and harassing disabled people. We will mobilise all possible resources to support victims and to make perpetrators of harassment and abuse accountable for their actions," she added.
Have you experienced disability discrimination at work? Whether it's bullying, abuse or a lack of opportunity, discrimination is wrong and must be fought. If you feel you may have experienced it, contact your local rep or get in touch with the CWU Equal Opportunities department on 0208 971 7388.

Disability Harassment Needs Tackling
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Does anyone have a link to the CWU database that logs the physical injuries that exceed average occurrence due to the job?

Re: Disability Harassment Needs Tackling
You gotta laugh when you have a manager who is so fat that he has a heart condition and is therefore unable to complete his contractual obligations, but dishes out attendance warnings to folks with recognised RSI complaints. Karma fat man
