Dropping bikes off - health and safety!

A lot of people are now doing the cycle to work scheme.
Quick question. If a driver loads the bike in the yard then drops it off somewhere for the postie to pick up, are they covered by Royal mail if they were to have an accident whilst doing this? These bikes are very unwieldy and very awkward to get in and out of the back of vans everyday. This is asking for trouble. I have had no clear answers from any source so far so here's hoping! Thanks

We have a cycle repair centre on one of our rounds, so as far as health and safety is concerned no problem, however as far as rm insurance covering u for lifting a mates bike and having an accident you probably find they won't, would be same as dropping off a personal item for him and hurting yourself would be told its got nothing to do with rm,

There is no way i would be able to get a bike in my van plus all the other bits,this HAS to be a H&S issue surely?

I don't understand this, or have I read it wrongly? - why is a personal bike being transported out to it's owner? If you are on a revised duty that is now P&L or HCT based, then you should be returning to the office to sign off ..and if you aren't , then would you expect an RM driver to bring your car out to you at the end of a job and finish duty ???. Please explain further.

haha, nobody looks in health and safety because its usually so boring lol.

Anyway, in our office, customs and practice are that people finish their duties on their rounds. So of course they want their bikes at the end of their rounds.

And THAT'S why H&S is so bad in RM! Too many people think it's boring, or give into Management pressure to cut corners. Isn't it funny though, that the attitude changes dramatically when the inevitable happens and you get injured.......

the safe system of work regarding heavy and large items would apply, your dom will have completed a risk assessment in regards to it, if you ask him he should let you see what it states
