Ive only heard negative comments around the office and its been described as a thankless job but there are a few practices carring on which i think are dangerous and should be addressed so i may be interested ?

Health & safety rep, whats involved ?
They are looking for a Health & Safety in the office. Anyone had a go at this ?
Ive only heard negative comments around the office and its been described as a thankless job but there are a few practices carring on which i think are dangerous and should be addressed so i may be interested ?

Health & Safety in Royal Mail is an absolute joke.
With no reasonable limit on a postal worker's workload, and no limit on the amount of walking that is expected of delivery officers during the course of every working week, Health and Safety is only a cosh to bash postal workers over the head.
I wouldn't do it, no way.

Yes i agree with all that but its local issues in my office which bother me most and need addressing. Like broken wheeled containers with supports missing, no cycle helmets being worn and over weight bags being put out to drivers, stuff like that

Go for it.
Demand some training.
As a H&S rep you can cause much more havoc than an IR rep. You have much more legislation on your side.
It probably is a thankless task - depends what you want from it.
Every office should have one.

my opinion is if you become a rep you will find your hands are tied not only by management but our own area h&s reps and above

I could of been our H&S rep,and f**k me it would of been fun,but if my colleages won't listen to me...

H & S goes out the window when cost is involved.
Every morning our office is chocker with yorks, skips, trays on the floor, you name it it blocks walk ways, and bugger all gets done about it, if there was a fire and the lights went, we'd be right in the poo poo.

i would do it but as eveyone said it a thankless task just like being a rep eveyone moans at you about not get something done but when you tell them the answer they just ignore you and do what the f### they want then when the s### hits the fan they come crying to you

I would go for it. I've just taken on my offices H & S Rep role, my name kind kind of got put forwrd and despite reservations like you I'm going for it. The way I see it, its better to have a rep than not, just go into it with a realistic attitude, don't expect to change everything over night.
Focus on the positives, paid release for training courses. A chance to have a go at gaffers whilst sticking up for your collegues, and you have the law on your side not some flimsy agreement.
It will be hard to get changes, but any you achieve will be a victory over management.
.....and if you don't get on with the role you can always resign it!

whats involved in being a H/S rep ? Anything like the one round here then its lots of time sat on your arse at CWU HQ in ******** , lots of T&S and a half hour walking round a delivery office each day .Go for it !

Another postie senior to me has also showed an interest and i am not to sure i want to get into a ballot situ so iam going to hold back and see what happens for now

You could of course (do a Tony) by stealing the march on your colleague by getting your nomination in to your Branch for the vacant position of health and safety rep with the signatures of a proposer and seconder poste haste. Just because the other postie is senior to you doesn't mean that he or she will make a better representative than yourself, and of course if they see your nomination for the position is already up on the union notice board they may have second thoughts about applying for the post themself. They may also not wish to go through a ballot process as well, as there are no guarantees that they will be the successful candidate. It boils down to the fact that you either want the position or not.
