LTB 736/10 - Annual Health and Safety at Work (HSW) / International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) Conference - Thursday 4th November

No. 736/10
Ref EX2
Date: 27 August 2010

To: All Branches

Dear Colleagues

Annual Health and Safety at Work (HSW) / International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) Conference - Thursday 4th November 2010, Venue: The Botanical Gardens, Birmingham:
As Safety Representatives and Regional Health and Safety Forums will know, the CWU has a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the IIRSM for special membership arrangements.

IIRSM have announced the 4th Annual HSW/IIRSM Conference 2010 and IIRSM members receive £50 discount on the delegate rate.

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) is a professional body for health and safety practitioners and specialists in related fields who have a health and safety remit. It was set up to advance standards in accident prevention and occupational health throughout the world.
Established in 1975 this not-for-profit organisation offers membership to practitioners in over 70 countries. IIRSM welcomes third sector engagement at every level and actively seeks partnerships with equivalent bodies throughout the world. It has strong links with leading universities and international bodies and works to establish and promote standards of professional competence. In support of its mission statement: “to provide recognition, information, support and enhancement to our growing membership” IIRSM places the interests of its membership at the centre of everything it does.

The Conference will consider the latest Health & Safety at Work developments and practical solutions to build a safer working environment. Health and Safety is once again high on the agenda with the new government promising to review health & safety laws and the press continuing to label the health and safety profession spoil sports. However, the fact remains that health and safety management is about protecting lives. The profession is needed to protect workers and the public from serious harm and it is lobbying for the balance not to be tipped in the opposite direction leaving many at risk of injury. This important one-day conference will open up the debate with a panel session led by the government’s Lord Young, Geoffrey Podger of HSE and Keith Scott, Chair of IIRSM. The day will also include practical sessions looking at how health and safety has been tackled in practice, showing how a good workplace health and safety culture can save lives, prevent injuries and help to cut costs and promote efficiency.
Benefits of attending:

Lord Young, having published his review of the health & safety legislation for the government by then, will be coming to address the audience.

Geoffrey Podger, chief executive of HSE will be another high profile speaker, giving his response to Lord Young's review and

Keith Scott, Chair of IIRSM will also be addressing the conference about the future of the health & safety profession

Legislative Update – David Leckie, partner, Clyde & Co Solicitors

Chris Jerman from john Lewis will consider Practical Risk Management

Behavioural safety in practice will be illustrated by a case study by Craig Davies of HMP Parc, a category B prison

Steve Boorman, chief medical adviser at Royal Mail
Group will considering Occupational health.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
