TB 459/10 - Low Level Letter Box Campaign - E-Petition to the Prime Minister:
No. 459/10
Ref C32
Date: 24 May 2010
To: All Branches
Dear Colleagues
Low Level Letter Box Campaign - E-Petition to the Prime Minister:
Further to LTB 891/09 Branches will know that there is no legal requirement in the UK to follow the specifications set out in current European Standard (EN 13724) covering Private Letter Boxes which for ergonomic and safety reasons specifies the height, positioning and design of "letter plates and letter boxes" in order that the safe delivery of Mail can be made without the risk of injury. The standard sets down that the centreline of the Letter Box aperture should be at a height between 700 mm (2 ft 3.5 inches) and 1700 mm (5 ft 7 inches). CWU has run several campaigns seeking the support of government to enshrine the European Standard in to UK law and so better protect the Health & Safety of Royal Mail delivery staff.
The petition:
"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to follow the European Standard (EN 13724) regarding letterbox height."
Submitted by Postman David Campbell and supported by CWU received 609 signatures at the close of the petition. No response was forthcoming from the Government and no reply was received from the Minister to my last letter setting out our demands once again.
More details at the 'Number10.gov.uk' website at: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Letterbox/?showall=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The chances of convincing the present Tory Government to introduce Regulations are 'very remote' as a result of their 'de-regulation' policy of cutting not adding to current regulations and adopting a stringent 'One In-One Out' requirement, whereby any new law must include a cut in old laws, which together produce a net 5% reduction in the regulatory burden! However, we will continue our efforts and raise the matter again at an appropriate juncture.
Yours Sincerely
Dave Joyce
National Health, Safety & Environment Officer

On a recent absorption duty I was not too surprised to be faced with a letterbox about 6" from the floor. The house belongs to a registered osteopath...
You do the work, they get the loot. The men with the smiles and the 3 piece suits.
