Knee Problems

I cannot beleive how many Posties i know who are or have had knee operations,age range is 27-60yrs.
Plus I know many Posties who have sought medical advice regarding knee problems.

This is at a time when walks are based upon 3.5 hours- ish .

I am not saying their is a Problem ,but it does appear to be something that should be looked into
by whom i dont know ceratainly not by RM or the CWU who should fund a study are not intrested in such trival matters,far more intrested in producing crap propaganda called
The Voice .

You may be fine now but what happens 1-3 years or when ever if you suffer serious knee problems.iF you need a operation ,how can you come back as a walking postman on a 4.5-5 hour delivery?

i have within the last few months started to suffer with my knees.also someone else at my office does.

The state my knees are in now I doubt I will last another 5 years in the job. I've been having physio/steriod injections for nearly a year now and have to use a TENS machine nearly everyday so I can cut down on the painkillers and ibuprofen.

I too have had surgery on my knees, as has a colleague, but maybe these were due to old injuries.
Certainly Royal mail staff suffer more knee, back and neck injuries than they should.More than ever it is time to get the weight off the shoulder even if it is into some useless golf trolley.The body will thank you in the long run.
The medical profession/general public don't really understand how much exercise we do.When my colleague came round after the anaesthetic they pumped him with adrenalin because they were concerned about his low blood pressure.
When I came round they also expressed concern, but I managed to point out that low blood pressure is a consequence of being out on delivery for 3.5 hrs a day.

Had both my knees done due to wear and tear , now waiting for a 2nd op on my right knee ( think thas because of getting in and out the van ) But i think it must be running at about 10% of our DO have had knee operations over the yrs. Could be worth trying for some miners type class action for some compo for work related injury. If the new longer walks come in i can only see these types of injury increasing and also with the longer time till you retirer more medical retirements for people in their 50s

ive had 3 operations on my right knee plus got a snapped anterior cruciate ligament but told exercise will do me good

I had a new cruciate ligament stuck in ( actually used hamstring ) a few years before starting at RM ( old footy injury )

It had settled down nicely, but feels fooked again now.

did me right knee in last year,having the ligaments replaced by tendons in March,together with a Stage II,2 months on crutches,4 months rehab...............can't wait

Those of you with knee problems - what type of delivery do you do? I have always found rurals to be the worst where I have to get in and out of the van a lot. I recently signed for a park and loop (not van share though) type rural delivery so I don't have that much getting in and out and I have found my knees are a lot better :)

Yes i agree, I have been a rural driver for 25 yrs and knees aren't good but getting more concerned about hips!
In and out of a van ,especially low corsa's, isn't good at all for joints.
For town deliveries it's steps etc carrying bags or just the sheer ammount of walking!

It isnt just knee problems include in that hip problems,ankle problems and shoulder problems.

My right knee,ankel and hips are in bulk after a delivery and now i have the prospect of a longer del span IF agreed.

I cant see the sense it really the union think its great as the weight is going to be taken off our shoulders but i think this is a case of when the horse has bolted too late R/M AND CWU.

And to add insult to injury take time off for an op to correct the damage and you come back to face a stage OH how R/M care about my well being it just makes me fill up.

Its impossible to get the weight off our backs in my office, you have to beg for trolleys, they very rarely get any in, so you end up carrying everything anyway.

now and then i do feel mt knee playing up.
if we do get knee problems can we claim compensation off royal mail?

Cartlidge repaired and reshaped knee cap at the end of last year . Still get occasional twinge ,now other knee starting to give up the ghost.
4-5 hr delivery ,town walk

I have just started to get what I can only describe as a stitch in my feet. Just like a stitch in side of my stomach but in the arches and soles of my feet. Painful but not debilitating, and very brief.

Best get it checked out I suppose.
