International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) Membership for CWU Health and Safety Representatives - Agreement between CWU and IIRSM Announcement:

I am pleased to announce that following some very progressive discussions between the CWU Health, Safety & Environment Department and the IIRSM, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been agreed and signed by both organisations which establishes a collaborative working relationship between the two organisations, provides for an unparalleled package of benefits for senior CWU Health and Safety Representatives and gives enhanced professional recognition to CWU Health and Safety Representatives who have completed the TUC Occupational Health and Safety Certificate Course.

With immediate effect:

§ IIRSM will recognise CWU Health and Safety Representatives who have successfully completed the TUC Occupational Health and Safety Certificate (OCN Level 3) Course for Associate Membership of the IIRSM (AIIRSM). Applications from CWU Health and Safety Representatives will also be accepted from those who may hold either of the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, British Safety Council Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health, NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety or an equivalent qualification accepted by the IIRSM.

§ Any application received from a CWU Health and Safety Representative between now and 31 December 2009 (who has completed the TUC Occupational Health and Safety Certificate Course) and those in future who apply within one month of completion of the TUC Occupational Health and Safety Certificate Course will have the IIRSM Registration fee waved.
§ This level of membership gives the individual the right to use the designatory letters AIIRSM after his / her name as part of the membership benefits. Members will be able to use the appropriate designatory letters after their name as a mark of full professional status. Designatory letters enhance safety professional's reputation within the safety industry and show the professional standard individuals have reached. Designatory letters can be used on stationery, business cards, letters and email signatures etc.

Designatory letters after a members name is a mark of full professional status which enhances safety professional's reputation within the safety industry and show the professional standard individuals have reached.

Networking opportunities through Safety Groups UK (SGUK) provide the opportunity to network with other health and safety professionals throughout the UK

Events and regular seminars are held frequently throughout the UK.

HSW Magazine website for 'Members Only' includes benefits such as the latest in case law, archives of HSW articles, discussion forums and a full job network amongst others.

Technical Safety Information Helpline provides all IIRSM members with free access to an extensive Safety Information Service. Enquiries are dealt with by a team of qualified health and safety professionals, who offer detailed and impartial advice. Their expertise is supported by national and international databases. You can ring, fax or email with any queries and receive a fast response. You can use this neutral and independent source to check the interpretation of health, safety and environmental law, saving time and helping avoid injuries and ill-health.

IIRSM Newsletter is published each month and helps to keep members up to date with IIRSM activities and with new developments in health and safety throughout the UK and Overseas. Clear and easy to read and refer back to plus information about the latest health and safety news, developments, legislation and court cases, plus members views. Member's contributions, articles, case studies, profiles, letters or ideas are welcome.

Health and Safety at Work monthly Magazine (HSW) is sent to all members. It carries news on the latest regulatory developments and the 'story behind the story' on prosecutions by enforcing authorities, pinpointing the lessons for businesses. Features explain how to comply with new legislation, and best practice case studies provide inside knowledge of how innovative organisations have cut accident rates, or reduced the cost of sickness absence. HSW provides information critical to the smooth and safe running of any organisation and helps to keep members up to date with health and safety issues.

Legal advice Helpline provides members with a confidential free legal advice by telephone. This service is available 24 hours a day for personal or business legal problems.

Insignia Products are available for members, including extra copies of member's official Certificate of Membership or personal Membership

Going Forward

The CWU Health, Safety & Environment Department in conjunction with the Education and Training Department endeavour to provide IIRSM flyers and IIRSM information packs to TUC Occupational Health and Safety Certificate course students and students lists to IIRSM in order that IIRSM can write offering membership. (Keeping data protection in mind)

Regular meetings will take place between IIRSM and the CWU Health, Safety & Environment Department to discuss further areas of collaboration and joint working.
