When a DOM performs a soft, should the member of staff concerned be informed that a soft is being performed?

I think a SOFT is somewhere inbetween a ROCK HARD and a VERY WATERY, but I could be wrong.

No, SOFT does exist, or it does in our DO.

Something to do with not wearing correct equipment I believe.
Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

Challenging unsafe acts: safety observation and employee feedback

The Safety Observation and Feedback Tour (SOFT) is regarded as the most essential element to
demonstrate leadership and visibility to operational staff. If an unsafe act is observed the employee is gently
challenged:

they are supposed to challenge you at the time of the soft (remember you can soft your manager to)

We've had them every week, for quite some time. They're always done by the Shift Manager (in your case, presumably your DOM), and the H&S Rep. They check the entire work area, from one end to the other. And are supposed to flag up, anything and everything, that's a potential risk. Including anyone not following the SSOW. And a record is kept of all the findings, and put on the Noticeboard for that Shift. So we all know where the potential hazards are.

More importantly: If there's an accident, caused by something which was spotted on a SOFT Tour. There's a record of it, for you to use, if you need to claim compensation. :hmmmm

If someone is caught not following the SSOW. They should always be challenged. Whether they're spotted on a SOFT Tour, or not. Remember: We're all responsible for our actions/inactions. So if you see something dangerous. Say something. You could prevent an accident, by something as simple, as pointing out that someone's taking an unneccessary risk. :hmmmm

Brother andy2007 think you will find that the correct term is acts or omissions.

7 General duties of employees at work
It shall be the duty of every employee while at work--

(a) to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of
other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work; and

(b) as regards any duty or requirement imposed on his employer or any
other person by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to cooperate
with him so far as is necessary to enable that duty or requirement
to be performed or complied with.

Sorry. You're right. But I still think that it's important to say something, if someone's taking unneccessary risks. I know that I'm "Preaching to the converted" with you. But for the benefit of our Collegues on here. I'd like to quote a Poem that's been doing the rounds for a while now. But I think, really sums it up well:
I chose to look the other way
I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.
It wasn't that I didn't care,
I had the time, and I was there.

But I didn't want to seem a fool,
Or argue over a safety rule.
I knew he'd done the job before,
If I called it wrong, he might get sore.
The chances didn't seem that bad,
I've done the same, he knew I had.

So I shook my head and walked on by,
He knew the risks as well as I.
He took the chance, I closed an eye,
And with that act, I let him die.

I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.
Now every time I see his wife,
I'll know I should have saved his life.

That guilt is something I must bear,
But it isn't something you need to share,
If you see a risk that others take,
That puts their health or life at stake.
The question asked, or thing you say,
Could help them live another day.

If you see a risk and walked away,
Then I hope you never have to say,
I could have saved a life that day,
But I chose to look the other way.

Obviously our Employer is ultimately responsible for providing a safe working environment. And it would be ludicrous to try (which they do!) to put the majority of the blame on us. But that doesn't mean that we should be complacant.
