Incident or accident ?

Post by packmule »

last Septenber I was out on delivery and managed to injure my knee, ( possibly twisted without realising ) anyway I was unable to complete delivery and returned to the office informing them of what had happened. I was in formed by two line managers that it was a
incident not a accident
and as such was not logged in the accident book.
Surely this is a legal requirment to log all injurys sustained whilst on duty ?

take it outside the PO so RM can't close ranks , they won't like it but that's tough ! , report it to the Social and get it classed as a Industrial Accident / Injury

Somebody came on here saying he'd worked in the Insurance Claims Injury industry for decades and he'd never heard so much b***ocks in his life about accidents being classed as incidents .

The fact is that RM have been monitored by the Health & Safety Executive since 2004 , to be fair ; RM's policy is good but compliance is poor , I know of people that have anonymously reported accidents and injuries to either the Council Environmental Health or the HSE as they simply don't trust RM at all .

All RM are doing is massaging the figures .

There might be a witch hunt for telling tales out of class & " disloyalty " , just stand firm , it's a place of work not a prison or school though at times you'd be forgiven for thinking it was .

If some of those managers have never left the playground that's their problem , you're protected by employment law , so log everything , who , when , where etc for a rainy day

It should have been entered into the RIDDOR system (I think it's called ERICA or something like that), as it was an injury on duty. Regardless of whether they're classing it as an accident or incident. If they refused to do so, then they have failed to report an injury. I'm not sure whether that makes it a legal matter, or just something that the HSE would have to deal with. But either way: You need to get on to your H&S Rep ASAP!

again as royal mail try to redefine words and their meanings check out the OED's definition

accident.
1.an unpleasant and unexpected event,
2. an event that happens by chance

incident
1.an event
2.a violent event, such as an attack
3.the occurence of dangerous or exciting events

accidents tend to produce unwanted results.

I'm surprised RM haven't tried to blame him for it for " not taking care " :arrrghhh , somebody came on here that had tripped in a pot hole . If you're crossing the road , you're supposed to be looking both ways for traffic , utility companies dig up roads and do shoddy repairs - end of !

Well repotred "incident" to HSE and yesterday the deputy office manager was in a meeting with guess who ?
Just by coincidence I received a Special from our DSM inviting me to a meeting
to discuss my absence and the likely prognosis for the future for us both to see if there is any action or support either from myself, your line manager or the business suport team can offer to assist you and to potentially bring your absence to a conclusion
At the last interview with Atos their conclusion was a full recovery after keyhole surgery. :d'oh!
Do they bother to read these reports or not ?

Been trying to get union rep present for this meeting but no joy yet  Just what am I paying £2.92 a week for ?

Anyway now received hospital apointment to see surgeon on 3 /8 so hopefully be fully mobile again soon.

be careful - RM cannot ( as much as they'll try to or like to ) apply unfair detriment for reporting valid H&S concerns .

There's firms / organizations that have tried to get round that by saying " we no longer have confidence " , all that " team " b***ocks basically .

the answer to that RM one is that there is two " i's " in idiot , they'll see you as a loose canon and be looking for ways to " manage " you out of the business . Even Hellmail have remarked on the amount of paranoia within RM .

Royal Mail have a legal duty to keep a record of accidents at Work.
They use an electronic system on line called E.R.I.C.A.
If you have an accident at work or on delivery make sure you report it within 24 Hours.

Do not let managers put you off by saying an accident is an incident.Insist that an E.R.I.C.A. is made out.
Royal Mail must provide a copy of the E.R.I.C.A. to your Area Safety Representative.
Any crap from your Managers contact your Local or Area safety Representatives

Hope this helps :wave

Accident at Work !!

Post by Rabray »

I'm going through something similar at the moment I twisted my knee at work on delivery some 14 weeks ago and it still hasn't calming down..Had a MRI scan with no joy so I'm still having investigations into whats happening in side my knee which is becoming frustrating. Doesn't help when management are talking Medical retirement if I can't return to work and they may have to pursue that line after 14 weeks ????. IMHO if that's not putting on the pressure what is ??. Something you don't need "ON THE SICK !!!!!" is this the caring sharing management RM like to show the public ????..

As for my own injury almost sorted now , I had a few interviews with area Dom ,(took union rep both times ) and to my complete suprise went very well. No question of medical retirement as complete recovery expected and was allowed to go back on reduced hours , ( my choice ) as I was edging closer to six month on sick.

Absolutly amazed that there are still some managers that are not braindead tw@ts and can manage staff with resect.
Hope you have the same luck
