Classifying and Coding Causes of Sickness Absence -
Full Level 1 and Level 2 coding lists:

Introduction:
As part of the development programme for SART the IOM, in collaboration with HSE, was asked to devise a suitable standardised scheme for the classification and coding of Sickness absence causes. Aims were to produce a simple, yet sufficiently comprehensive scheme, with links to other existing medical classifications. The purpose of this guidance note is to describe the coding system that was produced and to outline how it can be used to record sickness absence cause in the SART, or utilised in other systems.

The classification scheme is designed to allow employers to easily classify in a standardised way the reasons for sickness absence provided by employees, be they from from verbal reports, self-certificates or from a medical practitioner via a medical certificate.

There are two levels of coding within the scheme:

• At level 1, 23 categories specify the main body system affected by the illness or ailment.
• For level 2, secondary coding can be used to specify more specific or detailed cause classifications on the sickness absence cause.

Is this now being used by RM?
If so, when was it agreed?

Brother andy2007, frankly I haven't a clue on whether this is being used by Royal Mail, but having said that, I haven't seen any CWU LTBs referring to it either. Just thought that it was worthy of a posting in making the brothers and sisters aware of it for info purposes. :wave

Thanks. I was just worried that they might have introduced it, without us being told. Although to be honest, I think that if it's used correctly (probably asking a bit much of RM), it would be an advantage. Because it would make the distinction between on-going problems, and lots of unrelated absences. That could only help those who are struggling with ongoing health problems. Particularly if it's somehing which can be controlled, once the medication is sorted out (been there, done that, almost ended up with an RTU!). As it would be harder for the Managers to accuse them of malingering. Which is an accusation which is thrown about far too much, in my opinion!
