COURIER

Post by silverback »

On page 15, guy wearing Wellington boots in snow. With RM trying to stop people wearing trainers, their excuse being, "If you have an accident on duty, a slip or fall, and you arent wearing the recommended footwear then your claim would be put in jeopardy". How can they condone wearing Wellington boots? Surely if its not safe to walk wearing RM issue shoes / boots then its not safe to walk at all?

In the September 2008 edition of the Courier "Your Letters" pages:
Heading Putting the boot in
Why can you no longer order Wellington boots as part of the Royal Mail uniform? I have to deliver to a number of farms and have no choice but to get out of my van to open a number of cattle gates. The problem I have is the amount of waste that gathers on the lanes - on rainy days, they can be more than an inch high in mud and cow waste, which runs down the lanes from milking parlours. I have to walk through this muck every day to open and close all the gates. If I had Wellington boots, I would leave them in my van and put them on before I go out. Instead, once I finish, I have to continue my journey and deliver to houses, sometimes covered in waste, which cannot be hygienic.
DT Postman, *********** Delivery Office

BT, national uniform manager, responds:

We still issue wellies to anyone whose job takes them into the kind of environment you work in, in fact, we have recently improved the specification. Order them through the uniform helpline as usual.

Make of that what you will :hmmmm

Thanks brothermagrew, but surely that means if we are to deliver in the snow as shown in the courier, all delivery staff should order a pair of wellington boots, and refuse to deliver if this necessary footwear is unavailable?????

I would simply say that it is a matter for each individuals personal choice, if they would prefer wearing Wellington boots whilst out in the snow, as shown in the courier. What is clear is that the national uniforms manager (Bob Taylor) has stated in the courier that wellies are still issued through the uniform helpline so I fail to see why this particular type of footwear is therefore unavailable, and why deliveries in your opinion should be refused to be done.

Simply put, if you want a pair of wellies then order them.

The Sledge on page one looked quite interesting. How many bags were on that? It also looked as though the person themselves had two bags on their back! I suppose they used thier own car to get out with too!

Incidently, What happend to the Health and Safety feature in each edition of the courier? I thought that was supposed to be in every issue! Figures.

Cheers Brothermagrew, Yeh I know there were a few articles but I thought it was supposed to be a feature every edition. I may be wrong though.
