Royal Mail suspends deliveries on Cleator Moor street after dog attack

ROYAL Mail has stopped delivering post to a street in Cleator Moor after a postal worker was attacked by a dog.

Residents living on King George V Street have been informed that deliveries have been suspended and they now have to collect their post from the Co-Op in Cleator Moor.

A letter sent out to residents, which has been shown to the Whitehaven News, says "the exceptional step has been taken in order to safeguard the health and safety of Royal Mail employees".

Kaseyann Coan, who lives on the street and is pregnant, says she is worried she will miss vital hospital appointments, as a result of the suspension.

The 17-year-old said: "It’s affecting us because we are missing hospital appointments which costs the NHS money. I'm pregnant and frightened that I will miss my scans. we are having to go to the post office most days to check if we have post there, costing us fuel. It’s just very stressful."

She said the dog, which is often left to roam outside, has been causing a nuisance on the street and around Cleator Moor.

"It's bitten a post man and bitten someone who tried to help twice. There's constant barking around our house until late at night.

"The dog wanders the streets scaring kids by constantly barking and getting aggressive at them. Nothing has been done. The dog is still out wandering until this day."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "A temporary delivery suspension is in place in King George V Close, Cleator Moor, to ensure the safety of delivery staff due to a dog being loose in the street and attacking the postman.

"We have notified all impacted residents and are in discussion with the owner to confirm what actions they will put in place to prevent the dog from getting loose in future.

“Our first priority as an employer is to ensure the welfare and safety of our people who provide a valuable service to our customers.

"Suspending deliveries is often a last resort, as we recognise the vast majority of dog owners are very responsible and keep their pets under control."

A spokesperson for Copeland Borough Council said: “We cannot comment on individual cases, if an incident of the nature suggested is reported to the council we will work with the relevant authorities to address it.”

Why isn't there a dog warden to deal with it, since it already has bitten twice, it should be put down.
