Hot weather

Post by vixpix »

With temperatures set to soar this week, are we supposed to work in 29 30 c without stopping? I'm pretty sure it's dangerous even if you drink plenty, what if you refuse to complete your round?

Ask your manager / H&S Rep to go through the Severe Weather Tool and follow the risk assessment procedure.
You should be able to agree locally to come in an hour or 30 mins early when its very hot so you can finish earlier thus not being out while the weather is ‘peaking’
You should hydrate as much as possible BEFORE you go out on delivery and go at steady pace, take breaks in shade if need be.

You should not “refuse” to do your round, if you can not complete by your finish time then explain it was because of heat and you were following RM guidelines.

Does the final run from the local MC arrive early enough for that to be workable?

Are you suggesting H&S of individuals should be a secondary issue to mail arrival times?

To answer, of course, it is - when heat is a real issue to H&S managers can roll over mail to the next day. Yes, it will mean delays but that has to be balanced with the health and well being of individuals.

Rolling the mail over is not an option as the final runs have all the SDs on. They also have a lot of Tracked on. The mail can't be processed earlier as it doesn't arrive early enough. Also we don't have the storage space so it's still going to have to be sent to the DOs

Delivery Offices can, and during covid have been doing so, which is why I suggested it. You asking if it's workable I guess you were asking based on being in an MC, I am DO and indeed rolling over is workable.

If the mail is being rolled over then why are we bothering with wave 2 of the mech? Given how little there is it might as well just be sent manual, if it's only going to get left once it reaches the DO

Because it's only left in (rolled over) for certain circumstances.

If we end up getting more than a handful of mech trained staff pinged by the app, then we'll be reverting to walk sort only as we don't have the spare mech trained staff. Depending on what machines the mech train staff are trained on, it could even be a case of sending everything manual. It's even worse if our SD locker staff get pinged by the app, don't know if RM would have us send the SDs through without being scanned or whether they'd get held and the early and late shifts process them before they get sent out on the next night's dispatches
