The dog's owner has been told to pay £2,000 in compensation

A Rushden postwoman lost part of a finger after she was bitten by a dog as she delivered mail.

The victim was on her round in Catlin Way when she went to post items through Shanice Blackette's door at about 12.30pm on December 12 last year.

But as the Royal Mail employee posted the items Blackette's shar-pei Mimi bit her - leaving her requiring hospital treatment.

The postwoman was later told that part of the top of her finger had been lost.

Blackette, 27, was later charged with an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act, which she pleaded guilty to at Northampton Magistrates' Court this month.

She was sentenced to a conditional discharge, meaning she will face no further punishment if she stays out of trouble for the next 12 months.

Blackette was ordered to pay the postwoman £2,000 in compensation and a surcharge to fund victim services of £22.

■ We understand that some people may be angry or upset to see their name published here but covering court cases acts as a deterrent against crime and it is important that justice is being seen to be done.

Under English Law, it is a general principle that criminal court proceedings for adults should be held openly and in public. Verdicts and sentences are normally given out in open court and so are in the public domain. Newspapers such as ours therefore have the right to publish outcomes of all such criminal court cases.
