Re: World Class Safety Pillocks
to be fair, this is a good thing, as the CWU do not have trained H+S reps in every office, ours has had no formal training and been in place for 4 years, the more people looking after our h+s the better, if RM are going to put people through training to deal with h+s in offices then there should be no reason to complain as the cwu seems unwilling to do it themselves

Re: World Class Safety Pillocks
i have no problem if the pillars are trained to the same extent as a qualified H&S Rep. What if a staff members comes to this pillar reporting an accident and are discouraged from reporting the accident in the ERICA due to corporate policy.
Will this pillar be able to give a balanced opinion as to stress and Presenteesim?
Will these pillars be trained in the Equalities Act etc?. it all sounds great on paper, but reality tells a different story on individual office budgets and performance targets.

It is not up to a safety pillar,a CWU H&S rep or even a manager whether an accident is entered into the ERICA system.gluteus maximus wrote:What if a staff members comes to this pillar reporting an accident and are discouraged from reporting the accident in the ERICA due to corporate policy.
It is completely the decision of the member of staff as to whether they have had a reportable accident.
In my experience safety pillars are not involved in the reporting of accidents although no doubt in some stupid office somewhere a lazy manager has seen the opportunity to pass some of their work off to someone else.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

probably trained to a different standard, but its worth remembering that delivery office H+S reps trained by the CWU are not qualified enough receive an accredited NEBOSH certificate, they are not that "qualified" so to speak
accidents should be reported to the DOM in first instance anyway not the pillar or the CWU H+S Rep
delivery office reps are only supposed to be dealing with certain things, its worth a look at this:

what i am trying to say is that the things you are on about are not really the responsibility of a delivery office cwu h+s rep anyway

i myself do hold the NEBOSH qualification, but i am not employed by Royal Mail. My interest is that my partner is employed by Royal Mail and the inadequate provisions given to her following a bout of post natal depression. She was treated as no more than a commodity to be abused rather than an employee with a medical condition. I am appalled at the treatment staff are receiving by the business. Managers seem to be ignoring even the minimum levels in duties of care

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: World Class Safety Pillocks
yes they do, in fact they often try to get round their own OHS recommendation, you seem to have an issue with the H+S Pillars, they are not the issue, they are being brought in to try and help the situation, the office cwu h+s reps only have very limited training and wouldn't deal with the issues your wife has, these would be passed at least to the Area CWU H+S rep who is qualified to a far higher standards and can deal with issues you have mentioned ie equality act etc and he would in turn directly go above the office managers head to the area manager, so in your wife's situation, both the pillar and cwu unit h+s rep are too low on the food chain to even worry about, your wife should be calling either the ATOS the RM health care provider or the CWU women's officer or the area Health and safety rep for matters like thisgluteus maximus wrote:i myself do hold the NEBOSH qualification, but i am not employed by Royal Mail. Re: World Class Safety Pillocks
World class pillars with regards safety are usually managers who have received PIC training .....person in control......and have received training in risk assessment, fire safety etc.......they are or should be more than proficient in doing the role.....I myself have done loads of courses and refreshers ove the last 9 years and I am sure that should apply to those that Arne safety pillars..........not pillocks as you put it !

in reply to your post 74tower
You mention training over the last 9 years. Has that training been through any accredited outside independent agencies, or is it through Royal Mails own interpretation of statutory procedures?
I myself sat down with the manager of one of these large mail dispatch units after making a formal complaint. We discussed minimum health and safety statutory requirements, He was unable to give a coherent response to any of my concerns. And that was from a manager of one of these units.
i have no axe to grind at any one individual, there seems to be a lack of any corporate basic duty of care. I witnessed fire exits obstructed, The old style fire exit signs and not the pictographs, cardboard boxes lying about. This shows that the training modules given are either ineffective, the incompetence as you put it of the PIC, or not being enforced due to the cumulative economic factors such procedures have on the business. The whole health and safety organisation seems archaic and behind the times on what is now an acceptable practice by a major UK employer

However, just a thought have you considered contacting the head of H&S in both RM and the CWU to see what there positions are.

Re: World Class Safety Pillocks
I have sent a letter to the CEO Royal Mail Moya Greene corporate offices for a detailed explanation. I will update this forum when i have received a response. I will not be accepting the normal corporate sensitive response which i will no doubt receive. I have also sent a duplicate request to the Communication Workers Union in Wimbledon. Royal Mail has breached so many mandatory basic levels of care in that i am now lost for words. I am now of the opinion that these managers now enforcing these so called health and safety policies will be unable to last five minutes in the real world, and outside their own little bubble within Royal Mail.
