its not only dogs i've been attacked by a cockerel twice and a pheasant once

pheasants run a mile when they see you

No they don't, especially not the males.
They can be very aggressive. Had one charge at my van once.

ok the ones i see are always running away

they are a rural bird and fear human contact .
