Death lump sum but not in service
Hi just looking for advice. A friends dad died and he wasn’t employed by Royal Mail when he died. However my friend is convinced he will receive a lump sum amount now he has died from the RMPP. My question is how can a lump sum be paid when he wasn’t taking any of his pensionable benefits and he wasn’t employed by Royal Mail when he died. Also my friends dad didn’t have a spouse or any dependents as my friend is 35 so would he actually be entitled to anything ?

He could receive a lump sum payment, but I assume your friends dad will of needed to have filled in nomination form/s naming him, for him to stand any chance of getting anything.
The subject is covered on both the RMPP and RMSPS websites:

If no one was nominated on the form, I would have thought they will still make a payment into his estate. Any surplus left in his estate will then be distributed according to his will or if he had no will by the legal laws for the uk.
