Government pension pledge welcome

The Government's announcement yesterday (Wednesday) that former state employees will be able to keep their original pension agreement after privatisation has been welcomed by CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward.

The CWU recently solidified a landmark legally-binding pensions agreementwith Royal Mail which provides greater protection for postal workers.

Dave greeted the Government's decision to allow employees protected person status: "The Government has made the right decision to honour previous pension agreements for former state employees. Postal workers who joined the Royal Mail when it was publicly-owned should not be penalised just because the company has now been privatised."

He added: "The ground-breaking Royal Mail deal secured a legally enforceable pensions agreement and in fact improved the current pensions arrangements for postal workers by increasing the rate at which Royal Mail contributes to the scheme."
