Retirement

Post by postie1947 »

As I am just approaching 65 I wish to retire from Royal mail but I am informed I have to resign, WHY?
Also when I am retired will I get any perks like free redirection and keepsafe?

The issue is all to do with a change in the employment laws. People do not have to retire at 65 as previously was the case. If you want to retire you have to resign, simple. This is part of the governments attempt of avoiding a pensions catastrophe with people refusing to save for retirement. It's moving the goal posts. I cannot understand why people don't have the time nor money to save, it's just an excuse if you ask me. In 10 years or so we will be facing another problem. What to do with all the school, college and university leavers who cannot get jobs because of the selfish fools who haven't retired keeping hold of the jobs and the spineless politicians who cannot, or will not, make it compulsary to save. It's simple, if you refuse to save then you should be left to your own devices. Why should the tax payer foot the bill?

I'm not sure what benefits retirees get, the Courier should give some info. Hope that helps. All the best for your retirement.

Like you I will be 65 this year. Last October the law changed and 65 is no longer retirement age but the age you get your state pension. Employers can no longer force you to retire at 65, so Royal Mail's approach now is to regard you as employed for as long as you can do the job until you decide to leave. Therefore you now need to give notice in the same way as anyone wishing to leave the job at any age.

As far as perks go, the list in the back of the Courier shows which perks are available to employees (marked with a E) and those available to pensioners (marked with a P). Some are E only and some are EP - check it out.

Good luck with your retirement - I am certainly looking forward to mine!!!
