Actually Royal Mail have "improved", or rather moved, on their proposal but the Union rejected it quite forcefully.

and rightly so. it amazes me though, that they bleat on about the shareholders being the most important thing and they've GOT to keep them happy, but they KNOW for a certain fact that taking executive change to the pension will bring strike action. that will most definitely ''upset'' the shareholders to say the least

It's a calculated gamble.
RM know that everyones' enthusiastically on the gate for a week, and then the gradual "I can't pay the rent" cries start and slowly people return to work, and that's not taking into account those who wouldn't go on strike anyway and the casuals they'll bus in.
{History shows there's too many sca**y bla**legs in this firm for strike action to work long-term}
When the workforce return to work they'll be hit with a new contract of employment...sign or feck off...and RM's got what they wanted all along.
CWU need to be careful with this one. It isn't the usual "more pay" dispute of old.

Well put. One of the big issues surrounding industrial action is the lack of financial back up. Many people don't have massive amounts put away, so they will almost certainly crack in the early stages of any dispute. The union will have a big problem if they aren't careful.

Which is probably why strikes these days are usually for odd days instead of all out.

True, but a waste of time tbh. Much better to take Thurs,Fr, Sat off. Then Mon,Tues,Wed the following week. People tend to do all the overtime they can which negates the impact of days out here and there.
