The Official Answer is that it costs too much to pay staff to stack these letters and put them through a SCM -Yeah Right !
Also RM say technically they could prosecute people for theft when reusing these stamps , but apparently it'd be a PR Disaster , you can read between the lines there !, the only other excuse is get the stuff out of the building so RM don't get fined by Postcon .

Some of the excuses I've heard in a vaguely similar Industry about Revenue Loss were unbelievable , to say the goal posts were moved would be a massive understatement . All Slash and burn -the big picture with RM ? -What's that !

Can't imagine say Kwik Save etc putting 10p price labels on their groceries when they should be 99p and letting customers strip the shelves , but RM isn't known for joined up thinking , the sort of place that would make Cardboard Submarines .   :hmmmm :hmmmm

The other part to this story is, that the date stamp is proof of when the item was posted.

Our Centre starts off cancelling, using handstamps, but gives up, if it looks like the whole evening is going belly up, or well before, on most days.

Yes, but that's only packets, parcels, etc. handed over Post Office counters.
Large letters, packets and anything else too large for automatic sorting that is posted in post boxes doesn't get cancelled.

How long do you think your Mail Centre................

.................and Royal Mail have got, before the final curtain?

I give our Centre 4 Easters, and 4 Christmas periods, unless a miracle happens.
