IMPs get it in the neck

Post by oldrope »

Today our manager told us not to run the IMP down till bang on break time, and be back bang on time. its ok with me but rest of floor go 5/10 mins early(washy hands time) the imps do not get washy hands time in our MC. if the MC fails the shift it is the fault of the IMPs (or should i say the staff) not the case ifthe imp is playing up what can the staff do? To me i think it is far to easey to blame the imps for bad manegerment else wear in the MC. yes i do work on the imps and it pisses me off when the manager is looking over you when youare clearing a jam or putting a belt back on then trys to beat you to the start buttton.

IMP crews have been resented at BMC for years. When there done, they go home, 10-40mins early (until recently :funneh ). When other areas in the Centre are done (except PSA) they are assigned to other areas in that last headless chicken hour to minimise the failure (or sometimes clear).

Yep I work on the IMPs at Bristol Mail Centre. We used to go about 15 minutes early on average, relatives, scared of, favourite in that order and then a few crumbs last. I thought when we got that letter from shift manager saying 10 oclock finish that was it. They said everyone would be equal after the years of complaining. I came back from holiday and the managers had come up with a new deal where the imp crews would forgo their 20 minute break and go home at 9.40. They then said oh but you can have 20 mins if you cover one another and go one at a time, which I hate and is knackering and stressfull. On top of this we've now been told job and finish is back again and the earliest we can go is 9.20 ( 40 minutes early, which we've made a few times in jan 08). I would definately rather go at 10 and have my real break back and not be pressured into speeding at the end, but the majority dont want that. Dont know what it is about imps at bmc, they constantly say you are crap at your job, but if you try and get off them they wont let you go. A few imp operators may have more say in how the mc afternoon shift is run than the shift manager via mech manager and the man. I dont want their crumbs though.

Perhaps dirty hands are a requisite?

IMPs get it in the neck

In my opinion this really goes back to a past thread that became locked. Not sure if we should travel down that road again. One observation I have noted is that your manager tells your section and colleagues that they are to blame for the failure. I would say every section is told they are the blame, you just can't be on every section at once to hear it. It's a good way to drive us plebeians to work harder. Similar to how we're encouraged to compete against other machines to get the best figures, and we do fall for it. Having said that, the IMPs do play a pretty much integral part of the process, so I imagine all eyes are constantly on them. Hence the blatant leaning on machines whilst drinking coffee and doing crosswords could be, I imagine, an easy target of blame for a failing Shift Manager. Oh! And yes I am IMP trained now.
