All outward mech-single pass
Weve been told all mech is to be run on a single pass now,as was run at christmas pressure.Any other MC's doing this,as it impacts on jobs, and the quaility of Inward breakdown to the receiving MC?

Re: All outward mech-single pass
Yes you end up with two single pass plans which you still may have to swap between during the day, although its mostly one plan per shift. All your work will be sent out unbroken down - one city/one perstop box. Unlike as before when say Birmingham had eight boxes, now theres one. Does end up with loss of positions in mail centre, but they still havent done it after talking about it for nearly a year. Eventually the positions will be lost but as there is no compulsory redundancies or buydowns then all affected people will have to be redeployed elsewhere on the same shift. Of course they will keep their TPM £21 for three years as theyve been pushed off against their will and also there is talk they will be given a preference exercise, so at least they get some say. Some people have been waiting for VR for one year now so there will be places to fill, if not then the displaced staff are still not going anywhere because of no compulsory redundancies. Inward mail will arrive unbroken down so would have to go through a mail centre night shift before going to a sequencing centre. All this to save 30 minutes off a delivery duty, what a waste of time and money.

Why would there be any more missorts than currently?Excuse the stupid question as I am a simple delivery postie but - If they only do 1 pass then the failure rate in mech bundles, ie missorts included in them, will only increase meaning that any savings in walk sequencing will be wasted in fell swoop
No impact on walk sequencing either, as the I/W MC break down the mail enough to be walk-sequenced, but the biggest problem then for the I/W MCs is the MDEC staff short-coding

Ah you see you have answered as an MC employee not a delivery postie, so not much help but thanks for trying. To be fair you did answer but you did not explain the reasons why there would not be less missorts, but as I said thanks fro trying.Tman wrote:Why would there be any more missorts than currently?Excuse the stupid question as I am a simple delivery postie but - If they only do 1 pass then the failure rate in mech bundles, ie missorts included in them, will only increase meaning that any savings in walk sequencing will be wasted in fell swoop

Lets try again.
At the moment with 3 passes (or 2 not sure) we have coded mech bundles that have missorts in them (as in for a different delivery or even a different office)- this happens on a daily basis. So if there is only going to be one pass I am asking if their will be an increase in this type of missorts.
If there is likely to be an increase then we have more manual mail to resort at the IPS frame meaning any savings we make by having walk sequenced will have to be balanced by a certain amount to account for any missorts caused by reducing the amount of passes it has to make through machines. The way its been explained here is that we will still have IPS but reduced, we will still have coded bundles as we do know just less of them, and we will get sequenced mail as well. As I understand it the sequenced mail will provide the bulk of letters but not all.

Re: All outward mech-single pass
Over Christmas we received hundreds of thousands of letters with short codes. If they were in with the batches they went through one of our 3 sequencing machines and got rejected - in one end and straight out the other and ended up on the manual IPS. If the trays were labelled 'res' they went straight to the IPS.
Total waste of machine time, yorks and yorks of manual mail to be sorted - kind of defeats the object of sequencing really.

The single pass processing is for O/W mail from MCs, are you confusing this with CSSs doing one pass?Ah you see you have answered as an MC employee not a delivery postie, so not much help but thanks for trying. Don't know I am a delivery postie so don't know the black magic that is machines at MCs. Basically I am trying to find out how this 1 pass instead of 2 or 3 will affect us snowmen/snowwomen at the sharp end.Tman wrote:The single pass processing is for O/W mail from MCs, are you confusing this with CSSs doing one pass?Ah you see you have answered as an MC employee not a delivery postie, so not much help but thanks for trying. Re: All outward mech-single pass
If a CSS does a single pass it is walk sorting not sequencing. It still needs a full route code, short coded items just get rejected.Tman wrote:The single pass processing is for O/W mail from MCs, are you confusing this with CSSs doing one pass?Ah you see you have answered as an MC employee not a delivery postie, so not much help but thanks for trying. It shouldnt really affect you TBH mate, its more relevent to the bods on the mech at mail centres,i'll try and explain, here goes...up until now(at my MC anyway)the whole country is broken up into 2 "plans".One is mainly NI,scotland, midlands, basically all the distant airmails etc, which were run through the IMPS,with maybe up to 4/5 selections for each major area(BT,EH,LS,etc). The rest, mainly neighbouring,SW England and Londons was sent to a single box at the end of the IMP,which was placed on a letter rack, and taken by a runner to the LSM's to be run for a similar breakdown by them. Each IMP/LSM has 160 box selections, take away a few for manual/refeeds,so you had 320 selections. Therefore the powers that be obviously think that by sticking it all through on just one pass they are saving money by cutting those LSM duties out.The reason for these changes is what's prob more relevent to the average postie. Now i've heard on the grapevine that later this year we are losing 3LSM's and gaining 6CSS machines to go with the 3 we already have. This,in theory will give our MC the capacity to sequence all the mail for all the DO'S in our area.I'm afraid to say this makes sense on their part,as if you have all the CSS in the MC instead of the indivdual DO'S if one was to break down, the proc engineers are just at the other end of the MC,plus you have IMP/LSMs as backup to walksort it.If they were to stick a CSS in every major DO instead, when something went wrong you would have to ring the nearest MC to access an engineer!I think this is the way they will try and roll these CSS out nationally.......
phew!Right i hope that explains things from a delivery viewpoint a bit clearer anyway.
same as it ever was...

Your place has enough space to install these CSSs though, but many (if not most) of the current MCs don't have enough, and that's just one of the reasoning behind installing them in DOs nationwide.

Re: All outward mech-single pass
TBT one outward pass is part of Royal Mail"s new work plan. One outward pass allows a mail centre to concentrate more on inward and once all mail centres are on one outward pass allows mail centres to even advance the inward especially if walk sequencing has been deployed.
Of course one outward pass also allows Royal Mail to further rationliase mail centres as it substiuanlly reduces work tasks within the mail centre.
