Re: management monitoring
Any time a Manager invites you for a chat in a separate room be it informal or not - always request the presence of a Union Rep or a colleague.

Re: management monitoring
Answer - I might not need him but I WANT him.
As to monitoring if its informal and no formal action can be taken their argument would be its standard managerial practice to monitor staff in such a way. Mind you it does say something to the culture of RM if we don't trust them in informal chats and informal monitoring, this culture needs changing otherwise it, and not the CWU "stalling modernisation wherever possible" as RM claim, will bring the edifice crumbling down.
I seriously believe and have posted it before - the greatest crisis facing RM is the lack of Management Modernisation in not only its structure but its Personnel Procedures as well. Tweaking it at the corners like they did at Regional level last year does not count, its far to little and had no effect on the primary task.

Re: management monitoring
Royal Mail management, at any level, are not good at man-management skills. A good number lack even customer service skills if our DIM DOM is any measure to go by!
DIM DOMs repeat parrot-fashion anything that comes from above with little or no consideration as to the consequence for there own office. 'It's what they want, so get on with it!' That attitude does little to foster a good working relationship between management and workforce.
It is time for RM to vet and monitor their management more stringently from independent assessors. How often do managers receive low scores in 'Have Yor Say' questionnaires and nothing appears to change? How often do grievances against managers just get left in 'in trays', never to see the light of day? With that climate of management is it any wonder that employee frustrations quickly mount.
The current dispute is an example of how RM (mis-)management escalated from isolated local difficulties into national action. The issue goes deeper than just CWU and RM trusting one another, it is a matter of whether management have the competence to manage. Without a fundamental change in how RM is managed the future looks bleak, with or without a new agreement.

Re: management monitoring
Thehappyones sounds just like the new dim in our office, but we have a few in our office who can and will stand up to him, its only a matter of time before he is shipped out.
