Can anyone tell me if royal mail can force you to work on bank /public holidays.Last night the managers in glasgow mail centre told staff that from now on there will be no days in lieu for staff who work bank holidays, staff will only get 8hrs o/t.
staff were also informed that they must attend these nights or they will be classed as AWOL

Re: bank holiday working
i'm not a legal expert and nor are others on here i guess, having said that according to other posts made O/T is voluntary.
If your shift starts and finishes on a bank holiday then applying the thinking above the choice is yours as to whether you attend or not.
However if your shift overlaps the bank holiday your attendance is compulsory from or until midnight or both possibly.

Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP

If you're rostered to work, then that's what you have to do unless the MC (or whatever) announces it's closed on that shift.
You can't "choose" to not attend without prior arrangement.

I think that what he is asking is that if, for say, you are told that you MUST attend then you have to.raider1 wrote:Can anyone tell me if royal mail can force you to work on bank /public holidays.Last night the managers in glasgow mail centre told staff that from now on there will be no days in lieu for staff who work bank holidays, staff will only get 8hrs o/t.

But in this case they are not being offered the double time and a half! (OR time and a half PLUS the day in lieu!! )
ONLY the normal weekday O/T rates
You will have to elaborate a bit further, is it all staff or have they moved the goalposts in a particular area, shift or group of people?
I know you think you know what you think I meant!
But do you really know?

Re: bank holiday working
This will affect the night shift in GMC when the they bring in new duties by exec. action on 21st Sept. The following weekend is a local holiday and everywhere else will be working normally that day. The shift time has changed to 22.15-06.15.We've been told we will get 1hr 45mins bank holiday rate and 6hrs 15mins OT rate but no lieu day.
In the past when it's been a national holiday they just tell us we're not in that night and they're looking for volunteers but when it's a local holiday suddenly everyone is in but now you're not getting a lieu day.
Surely under the terms of the Way Forward as long as you give 24 hours notice you can submit an overtime handback form as it's 8 hrs OT that night.

To get the day off in lieu you have to do at least 2 hours on the BH. Cunning.weegiebhoy wrote:The shift time has changed to 22.15-06.15..

It is over 2 hours per the way forward so even starting at 1 minute to 10 would make you qualify

Re: bank holiday working
thats right you have to work over 2 hours to get day in lieu, its the Edinburgh holiday on 21st sept and we have a notice up saying you have to tell staff branch if you don"t want to work the holiday. usually its the Sunday night they shut down and transfer that to the Monday night and Monday night staff start Tuesday night. you could argue its a official holiday and you are only scheduled to work 32 hours or 4 days as we in Scotland gave up the august holiday to get 2nd jan
