Bristol Mail Centre

Post by teesdale »

Whats happening at Bristol Mail Centre. Mail Centre Manager has left to become General Manager of Plymouth, Exeter, Cardiff, Southampton and Dorset Mail Centres. Maybe he hired too many people as part timers went full time, and then he extended fixed term contracts another six months under pressure from manager friends. After Christmas there will then be 30 to 40 of us too many. Interim MCM will take over in mean time whilst doing his own very vital job of performance manager at the same time. The job will probably be given to him which is good because he is a coward. Inexperienced new young managers causing havoc including using position to harass someone more beautiful. Ahh the benefits of being an acting manager. Been at least three failures to clear the work over a two week period. Stiflingly hot inside but you are expected to work at same speed so close supervision can be down to three metres. Soon everyone will have their own watching manager. Poor Late Shift Manager was nearly made to investigate length of breaks by his new young hand picked team, but bottled it at last minute realising he himself was making some people have only one break a day whilst granting others three breaks a day. Add in praying and smoking breaks and you have some people on one break a day of one hour, but in the same mail centre, other people on six breaks per day adding up to two and a quarter hours. Saw the new young stars have a social gathering on the floor mid afternoon as they have nothing to do for three hours. An older hand with many years under his belt stood awkwardly alongside the flirting kids wondering how it had come to this.

Saw a strategic involvement notice saying that Royal Mail had recovered over the weekend from the Friday 26th strike day. The reality showed the warehouse full of about 150 yorks of bags containing packets on the 30th. I think the interim mail centre manager with nearly 20 years experience had forgotten that the postboxes had to emptied next as well. I expect there to be more mail in Bristol Mail Centre tommorow(1st Sept) than I have ever seen.

1 September. Arrived to find about 650 yorks of mail throughout Bristol Mail Centre. Early on there was still a bit of space around to put something. By the end of the shift the warehouse had more unprocessed mail than I have ever seen. The chaos that built up made it impossible to actually send any work out as well. On the loading platform they ran out of yorks so had to pile up the bags of mail on the ground. These are only just under cover of the roof. If it rains a lot of it will have to be moved quickly. The mail centre is now full. The only way to store more mail is to block the walk ways and tug routes. Unbelievably the interim Mail Centre manager and the Late Shift manager both didn't come in today!

I wonder if we're going to end up with a national shortage of yorks and maybe trays over the next week or so

Certainly the case last night Yorkies were like gold dust took about 45 minutes to set up one bull ring for Tracked then used the empty sleeves to make up others as we went along if this is what 1 day of strikes does god knows how bad it will be after a 2 day strike

Time to break out the cardboard sleeves (well we often end up using them at the start of a shift as we never have enough normal sleeves)

Our MC uses them all the time, particularly on the PSM if the outgoing packets are going to another MC with a PSM.

So much easier tipping them in the machine than sleeves in Yorks.

2nd Sept Bristol Mail Centre. It was recognised that there was so much unprocessed mail about that it could be a health and safety hazard. I would say about 250 yorks left at the end of todays shift. All areas still failing after 26th/31st August strikes, which is eight days later since it all began. Spotted Special delivery lost in the sea which will result in compensation claims. Mail Centre Manager still missing. Late Shift Manager still missing.

If that's all we've got then they'll be used. There's probably a strong possibility that we'll get the odd night soon where everything goes out in cardboard sleeves, as many of the normal sleeves are going to end up stuck in various parts of the network

You'd think they'd at least get the SDs cleared. How many SD locker trained staff do they have in addition to the normal SD locker staff?

The SD guarantee was suspended as of the day before the first strike until the situation returns to normal.

I take it Bristol MC isn’t alone in having this sort of issue?

Are there other areas in trouble?

How’s Peterborough MC?
