We’ve committed to invest in nine more parcel sort machines (PSMs) in eight mail centres as we bid to move towards at least 50% of parcels sorted automatically by the end of 2021/22.

At our full-year results announcement yesterday, we revealed our commitment to competing in the parcels market.

This latest investment in PSMs will move us closer to that. The eight mail centres provisionally in the plan are Cardiff, Croydon, Edinburgh, London Central, Northern Ireland*, North West Midlands**, Romford and Southampton.

These will join the 16 plants already running our 20 deployed PSMs and the rollout of four more that have already commenced. It means we hope to have around 30 PSMs in our operation by the end of 2021/22.

‘We need a step change in parcel sorting automation, and not just for cost efficiency reasons,’ said CEO Simon Thompson. ‘Like letter sorting automation in the past, we know that parcel sorting automation will allow us to increase our capacity, improve quality and enable even later acceptance times for our retail customers.

‘We currently sort 33% of our parcels automatically. But really, we need to get to 90% automation as soon as we can. That is the industry benchmark.

‘Our new hubs will bring us another around 15% when they start operating in 2022 and 2023. Our challenge is to close the rest of the gap within our existing operations.’

The first machine will be deployed in North West Midlands (Wolverhampton), and the build will commence in the late summer with the operational trial continuing through Christmas Peak. The remaining machines will be built from January 2022 onwards. We have not yet agreed the order in which the subsequent machines will be deployed.

*The final decision on whether we can deploy at Northern Ireland is subject to the mail centre meeting space and operational benefit criteria.

**North West Midlands will have two machines as part of this rollout due to their parcel volumes.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
