I think the customer service has taken a beating since the one post was introduced. Before I would be out 7:30-9:30am but there was no sense is rushing round as you'd go back for your meal break and then second post.
Now everyone gets in early, skips their break and rushes about to get home quicker and I've heard stories about the way customers are treated by post-people. I know i skip breaks and get in ealry but pee rpressure is quite a strong thing.
I have a unique view in a way as I worked on deliveries 1998-2001 and have recently returned in the last 7months.

Job and finish
Royal mail says Quality of service is at its best ever,is this true, only they know, but what i do know is that we will never go back to 2 deliverys, why? cost and if my office is anything to go by the posties would not like it,We done ourselves no favours when we used to do 2 deliverys, all the work out on the g.p. as we called it ,work like a nutter come back for the irish(2nd delivery)fingers crossed it would be light, biff the lot and straight home.Even then you would sacrfice your meal break in the hope of an early finish, unless you were a senior man and had a walk that took 45 mins an hour at the most.Iknow it might sound crazy but job and finish is the worst thing that has happened to us,it makes people come in early, not take there break and run round like a nutter e.t.c. i know the pays crap and its the only incentive weve got,but if we want a full time job ,maybe we might have to change the way we work, and take it a bit easy in future.

not so much coming in early but me personally i like to get my head down and steam round my round. BUT........ i still have time for a chat if any one stops me and i still dish out dodgy directions to anyone who asks.to me the real work is all done inside from ip to prepping to tying up. the delivery bit is something i do on the way home!!! (cycle duty). thats my philosophy and as soon as i am out of the office im on my way home. be it in 3 1./2 hrs or 2hrs.
im still young and to me stepping it up on the round saves on subscriptons to the gym!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Talking about the good old days my sister is a bit of a history buff and has just found out that one of our ancestors was a "letter carrier" in the 1880 somewhere in London we think. I wonder what he would make of todays posties and bosses.

2nd deliveries
I used to be able to get my overtime done, before the end of my shift time, when we had two deliveries. I can`t do a whole walk on overtime now coz it`s so bloody knackering!! ( and i`m getting older!!) But I do miss the days when I`d be delivering when it was still dark in the mornings and no-one was around. 2 or 3 full bags a day was considered a heavy walk then!! I took out a 7 bag delivery today!!

A few years ago I used to do a late shift one week out of three that involved doing the second delivery in three small villages west of Cambridge. We used to zoom round in about an hour, then have to wait another 2 hours before we could empty boxes on the way back. It used to be great to see my colleague on the early shift getting 3 or 4 hours overtime to finish off the first delivery while I sat there doing nothing. Of course I had cut off the previous week when I was on earlies and had got the overtime as well! I don't think we'd get away with this nowadays!!
I'm a Postman at the Henley Road Delivery Office in Cambridge.

When you see the original "old villages" on the walks of today, you can almost imagine how sedentary it must have been for a postman of 200 years ago, perhaps with only one bag of mail to whisk around with, before a cup of tea at Mrs. Miggins'... they must have been laughing their heads off and rolling in money!

We're listening
We're listening. You're not an old fool: I have yet to meet a British postal worker who isn't smart. All it is, we're all doing what we think is best and we all listen to each other: that's how you learn the job, over the years. We're all in it together. Rest on us.k979aaa wrote:I am nearly forty i have worked for royalmail for half my life nearly i was one of those young run about fools!.
