My best duty was also in the Data Post section on nights at Liverpool MC. You only actually worked around 1 1/2 hours a night we had our own TV and lounge set up in the locker. THe night shift manager used to come down and spend a few hours with us each night happy days!!

The best job i had was working in an Mail Centre repairing damaged packages etc, talking to customers whose items we used to find for them, just one problem i was bullied out of it buy a union person who is so lazy, dodgy goes home early etc. The management knew what happened but as usual they will not upset the union so i suffered because of it. stuff the union.

I pushed an empty york around in circles all day, chatting and drinking tea. Did this for 4 years of my long 12 year stint in mail center. I shall miss that duty!

any walk prior to the introduction of SDD, I loved getting up and having the whole world to myself, when delivering, only the odd milkman and paperlad, just me and l loved it, no Victor Meldrews to mither me.

I so agree with all those who say that the best duties were those when we could get out on delivery at around 0630, no coincidence that in those days our "customers" were pleased to see us.
My best job though was a late turn, when I was a collections driver working out of a mail centre, it was a mon-fri job and comprised..
1140 start-clear the yard of yorks, skips and pallets
1220 meal relief then drive to delivery office some 10 miles away
1430 depart and collect from 4 boxes before returning to mail centre
1500 tea break
1530 go out on collection
1615 first collection(!)
1900 return to mail centre
I once calculated the total amount of hours i actually worked, what a contrast with today but then again, jobs like that were totally unsustainbale in a world of financial reality, however i do find it sad that today so many of my colleagues seem to have to work in excess of what they are contracted to do, and without getting any overtime far less thanks!

Re: What has been the best duty you have ever worked ?
1976. As the old town centre developed and changes to the roads within it were either diverted or even removed, many of the houses and offices disappeared. A multi storey insurance office block was built and two roads of small houses were demolished. What had been a heavy town centre delivery became a doddle but with three or four heavy mail bags of office mail it took a long time to sort the basics.
The beauty was that each of the remaining offices and the multi storey had post rooms who insisted on sorting their own mail - bless 'em.
So a 5.30am start became a 7.15am finish. The second delivery spoiled it though 'cos we picked up a large residential area and had to work from 10am to around 11.30 to get round it. The most important part of the delivery was leaving the postmen's betting slips with the bookie who's daughter met me every morning. Mind you, I wasn't allowed to pick up the wininngs!
If we performed overtime in the afternoon/evening we were invariably booked to finish at the dispatch time with seven or eight barrows stacked high with mail bags. More often than not, as we were so short staffed and had very few drivers, Inspectors (remember them?) had to grovel to pursaude us to take the mail to the station and get it dispatched on the various trains.
Frankly, without the cooperation of postmen and some at least of the Inspectors, we were so short of people it was a miracle the mail ever got dispatched or delivered. When I joined, RM were going through 30 new staff each week. One look at the 5am start and most didn't turn up after the second week, especially if it rained! Recruitment held daily tests and interviews for 20 to 30 applicants, those that passed were trained for two weeks and then sent out on deliveries with a trainer. Very often the trainer would get back to the office alone and have to do the second delivery. The recruit meanwhile was never seen again.
I've just remembered that when the parcel deliveries were redesigned we found that we could finish by 10am each day. If you had visited the local Leisure Centre most days you would have seen a line of postvans. We eventually had a league playing squash against the local busmen who were in a similar scheme - but left their buses in the station.
Those were the days.

I used to do a monster of a walk a few years ago(1200 delivery points),but it was pretty flat and local to where i lived..so got on with it..what i loved was the 2nd delivery...where i could take a steady ride around on my RM bike as the duty was next to our office...and still get to the pub for dinner for a jar or two with work mates...happy days...

Re: What has been the best duty you have ever worked ?
started in the old King edward buildings back in the early 90`s as a cadet and the registered runs were a great duty from KEB to old street and back 3 times a day. usually did the first run about 9am after getting into work at 8am. 1 bag of mail and then let them know the 12pm run wouldnt be there as not enough work for a run and then go off till 3pm for the last run of the day. 5 day week monday to friday. was a really great duty. close enough to the shops for shopping and pubs. trouble is that was a cadet duty.
first walk i did was queen street in the city ( EC2 ). was quite heavy but had bag carrier with me at the time and when the city was bombed by the IRA i lost 3/4 of my walk to redirections. may have taken 2 hours to redirect everything but the walk was a breeze lol
