Introduction, son just joined as a postman.

Hi, I've joined to see what I can learn from you. My youngest son, who used to work for me, has just started working for Royal Mail as a postman. He talks about his job quite a lot but still needs to learn more about how things work, not just what the management tell him IYSWIM.

I work for myself repairing electrical appliances so quite different to what you guys do. If I'm not welcome here just let me know and I'll slope off again.

Thanks for the welcome. I've told my lad about the forum and he is going to take a look when he has a spare minute. He is feeling rather knackered at the moment as the physcal side of the job is catching up with him. Incidently his delivery office seems to work differently from how other posters offices do. He says he thinks each office decides how they arrange things to suit themselves. For example he is on a part time contract and is a reserve but is doing a walk while the regular postie is on maternity leave. He says he is on a 6 week rota where he works 5 or 6 weeks of 6 days and then has a week off but is paid as normal. He also gets paid for O/T & leaflets. He has been told by his trainer that wearing a cycle helmet is not compulsory. He had a puncture today. Guess who got phoned to take him a puncture repair outfit & pump?

On a serious note your son should always wear his cycle helmet - in the event of an accident he could lose some compensation by not taking that precaution.
He shouldn't repair the puncture himself but ring his delivery office for assistance, the cycles are usually maintained by a specialised mechanic who repairs them and maintains the cycle life history showing each and every time the cycle is worked on. In the event of an accident the H & S would need to see the relevant paperwork. Some offices do work 5 weeks on and 1 week off but most of us work 5 days on 1 off on a rota.

I'm sure I've just seen something that states existing employees who are not members of the scheme can join up to 31st January.
