Cusomer Reliant on RM
We are a business user (around 120 parcels 5 days a week) of RM services very worried by the industrial action which if we are honest seems to be caused by management that doesn't communicate well to its workforce in a hard place and a workforce which doesn't want to come into the 21st century. Always been a big supporter of a truly great service but lost so much faith over the last few months. Your competitors will steal the business if you don't come to terms with reality.

WELCOME TO ROYAL MAIL CHAT THE BEST POSTAL FORUM
maleorder. Thanks for the support. However, I must add that I for one am not opposed to modernisation and mechanisation, in fact I am looking forward to it. However Royal Mails proposals have nothing in my opinion to do with modernisation. The following has happened that I do not see as modernisation.
Withdrawal of services from POL by HMG, Now Royal Mail are closing 2500 post offices.
Mail deliveries are later now than the old 2nd delivery.
Last collections at some Post Boxes are at 9am.
Collections from post boxes on Sundays and Bank Holidays have been cancelled.
Collection Offices (where you collect parcels that postmen have not been able to deliver) closing around lunch time.
However, when they bring in walk sequencing machines and packet sorting machines which I believe are available commercially and are being introduced, this will be modernisation and I will accept it, even if it may cause me to loose a job I like. However, in my opinion Royal Mail are bringing in the organisation of modernisation before the machines and processes are brought in. Perhaps moving into the 21st century would not be so painful if all of the modern machines, processes, support and administration points were all brought in at the same time so that we could see what needed changing and what did not, rather than change everything before bringing in the mechanisation.

Thanks for explaining that - very helpful and helps me to understand. What is the view generally - will the ballot go for more action or will it accept the deal. I appreciate the difficult position you guys are in but we would have to lay people off if the there are more lost days in the run up to Christmas. Small business which relies on you guys.

I know well that they rely on the good will of posties and don't manage their people well - one of the guys who collects from us had his hours changed and promises broken a couple of times (he eventually resigned). So what is the answer? What will change by further strike action. And (selfishly) which way will the ballot go?
Seems like the PO/CWU needs very experienced charismatic leaders who can inspire the staff to want to help them fix this broken machine. A change at the top can often bring two sides together with fresh ideas
Oddly enough I worked for the old GPO in telecomms and remember well the day when Maggie Thatcher privatised it - I left to work for the competition and had a great career in an industry which loved change and profitted from it.
I do wish you all luck and can't wait to hear that we won't need to lay any of our great people off.

Thanks for the kind words maleorder. You must understand that you are the very customer we are seeking to protect. The fundamental principle of the post office is one price one service for all. This is being destroyed by government and big business. If you don't believe, read postcomm's report february 2007. The government has already determined that corporate customers will pay, less whilst our small business/domestic users pay more.

sorry maleorder but forgot to mention also contained in postcomm' report is a small para' of particular importance. It basically states that if Allan Leighton can prove that strikes are linked to modernisation then no penalties are forthcoming to R.M.
This means that when you see mountains of mail backlogged in mail centres. Our board of directors see little piggy banks.
The customer has already paid. R.M isn't paying any wages or overtime. Hey presto big profit huge bonus.
No wonder they linked modernisation to the pay deal.

I have been asking questions regarding our pensions for ages now with the usual responses. 17year holidays, black holes etc.. . I was told by a rep' today that apparently the administrators had focused their investments on just a few companies. I mean what the hell are they thinking? Who's running this thing? Laurel and Hardy? Even I know that you need a balanced and diverse portfolio. No one is accountable. No one says sorry lads we messed up.
We have directors that even on the basis of a couple of years with our company will live the rest of their lives in luxury. We have ministers who have ring fenced and enhanced their pension schemes and then have the nerve to tell us that were living longer. Instead of introducing a smoking ban they should issue us all with a pack of 20 when we sign on. If they took a 17 yr holiday what happened to the money they were supposed to pay?
If the stockmarket has doubled from its lows, why still the black hole? What were we invested in? dotcom's?
Northern Rock investors get guarantee's and public inquirys. What do we get?
