Hi all, i currently work for BT, and am looking to move across to Royal Mail. Ive applied for various jobs on the portal, and one being driver/postal worker. Ive been asked now to complete an online assessment test, please can someone offer any advice on what is usually contained in these tests?

Im currently employed as a manager at a large two letter communications company, and looking to leave and join RM. Not happy at the way im being asked to "manage" people. I have an online assessment for a drive/postal worker and have all my HGV licenses, its a temp 6 month contract, are these contracts likely to turn full time if you impress/work hard? i have a family and bills as does everyone else, so if theres was a very good chance that it would turn full time i would take it. Any advice much appreciated guys n gals.

Unfortunately it's unlikely that you'll get a FT (39 hours) contract with Royal Mail at the start of your employment, and in fact most if not all are sub 25 hours and 3 - 6 month Fixed Term Contracts. Even if you are taken on permanently in the end the average time to get a 39 hour contract is probably around 10 years.

However, although not guaranteed RM can't survive without overtime and there is usually plenty available.

You could consider going into management but if I am honest if you are unhappy at the way BT ask you to manage, then you'll face worse at RM, the culture is very much a masculine one, with managers being pushed to do things they feel uncomfortable with and a Unionised workforce that knows their agreements, and if they don't you'll still be expected to get the job done come what may.

The weird thing despite all the above, if you can get in, its still a brilliant job and one I would recommend to anyone who has a strong sense of self and the confidence to stand up for themselves.

Online test will include what is basically a spot the difference exercise aimed at checking how good you are with attention to detail.You are shown a series of paired numbers/letters representing made up postcodes or tracking numbers (up to 13 digits long) and you pick out the ones that do not match.

Took the spot the difference test today....seemed straightforward, we shall see. I have applied for some management roles allbeit as data centre manager, ive no idea how bad things are over this side, but where im at now is ridiculous......searching for reasons to put people on plans when they really are doing their job is not my style of management, its rife there.
