My condolences to you and your father for your loss.
I don't know the answer to your question. I pay tax on my RM pension. My guess is that he had a tax allowance for your mother and has now lost that and his pension has become taxable if he gets over the £10,000pa tax free allowance.

To find out for sure you can contact the RM Pensions Service Centre. Their helpline number is 0845 6030043 or email pensions.helpline@royalmail.com

Enquiries about your tax code should be made to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs tel: 0845 3000627

Tax Codes - Y = For people born before 6 April 1938 and eligible for the full Personal Allowance

Cum = Emergency Tax Code because of a change in circumstances

For more information see the RMPP Tax website Page at http://www.royalmailpensionplan.co.uk/45/tax" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My advice would be to contact both the Pension people and HRMC for clarification or to change his tax code.
