Top ale though lad. He brews it himself on the premises. Me and the lad like to start off in the Baltic, then head into town. The likes of The Globe, The White Star, Fly in the Loaf, Dr Duncans, the Dispensary, The Jacaranda. We usually end the night in The Carnarvon Castle. First, thanks to catch for your posts today and yesterday (I think) good information. The wildcats are indeed spectacular and as widspread as you point out. This goes against the media hype that only a tiny proportion of posties are wildcatting. In Liverpool, it was mainly Coppras Hill ( now all the offices in Liverpool are out but I might be wrong here Fri 15.00) who in the return to work Wednesday refused to accept the new signing hours. At my office (Birkenhead) posties signed on and worked to the job (ie taking breaks, not using cars ect.the result was further delays. Management response is to cut off sorting and send out posties with reduced mail. A massive log-jam of post is building up. Other offices (New Ferry, Prenton) this side of the water(Mersey) were also out Thursday but for victimisation issues. I managed to get to speak to the posties at Coppras Hill all were solid (not accepting new hours) I believe that this is the same in London. The posties are completely outraged at the manner in which RM have deducted the 4 days strike days, its a massive chunk out of wages. This has done two things a) made posties more resolved b) established exactly what we are up against - a management who are resolute, have the government completely behind them and who want to smash our faces in. This of course wont work, there is 40,000 jobs at stake.
I agree with catch when he says that there are lots of contridictions with the wildcats, both the CWU and RM want to take control of the strike. Dont forget that the CWU has told unofficial strikers to return to work, this is because they want to have a control of the movement. Its true that the wildcats are a minority of this strike but importantly they show the anger, the determination and the will to win and this is the predominant characher of the wildcats. What is also important is that after many years of being told by the unions that workers cannot act "illegally" workers are ignoring the label of "illegal" in order to pursue their own struggles. In a simular way with the pickets at my office several weeks ago when told by the police that "6 pickets is the legal number" the pickets (30 of them just ignored this and moved off for 10 minutes untill the police left. The CWU (with Hayes & Co)have at this moment returned to negociations with RM and according to the media there is an "optomism" regarding the negociations. I've just found out that there is to be a mass meeting of Liverpool posties at Aintree at noon today. I have a feeling that this is a high level stratergy to take control of the strike away from the wildcats..
I feel very strongly that there will be a comprimise on the part of the CWU regarding "flexibility" there is (I belive) almost agreement on the wage settlement and the pensions issue. On the question of RM's "plan" its desire to 'modernise' they wont be moved.
