I have wanted to become a postman for a while now. I haven't managed to find the right vacancy yet to apply for but I have been accepted for an interview as a christmas temp for a mail sorter. My question to you guys is this: Will working for royal mail as a christmas temp help me in any way to become a full time postman? Will it give me a foot in the door or is it best to stick with my current job with regular pay and wait for the right vacancy to turn up on their website?
Not impossible but highly unlikely. I am 6 years in and no prospect of full time. The best you could expect would be a rolling three month temp contract with a possibility of a permanent part time position after they've kept you dangling for a couple of years. With the prospect of privatisation ahead things may change but not for the better I fear.
You are unlikely to get a permanent job in a mail centre as mail centres are being closed and jobs cut. An xmas temp job in mc might possibly help when you apply for a delivery job, but probably not much. You would be better applying for a temp xmas delivery job, and you might be kept on after xmas, and the experience would help you more in getting a permanent job as a delivery postman.
I think I will take your advice baldrick and wait for a temp xmas delivery job to pop up and apply for that. Do they often have temp xmas delivery jobs available every year? I just assumed that the temp xmas jobs were only available in the mail centres. I spose if they need extra help sorting the mail though then they would need extra help in delivering it aswell!
Hi All, My CHRISTMAS Casual role is in Security Check Stage and in the mean time I have got an interview for temporary mail sorter- Part time, Can I take both these roles as I am willing to work more than 48 hours a week and meet the deadline for both these roles?
PS:- Xmas Casual is only for a month where as temporary- mail sorter is for 3 months.. Hence I will be doing extra time only for 1 month whereas rest of the months I will only be working 22 hours/week.
I need clarity on this in order to choose the best role if I cant do both.
