Hi all, been only a postman for a few months on a 6 month contract, working 9am till 2pm.
Finding it quite difficult at times to be honest, managers are awful at best. Going overtime a lot of the time due to poor walk plans, build up of mail due to some posties not taking absorptions meaning I for example and other new posties had a couple days mail to deliver in one day, prep work not being done even though it is suppose to be done, not able to have a break as I finish late otherwise, virtually no guidance or help when starting a new walk, most times feeling forced to go over my contracted time by a lot, and a whole lot of other problems.
Minus all the above, when it does go alright, I am enjoying the job.

you can claim overtime anytime you are late back - talk to your union rep ....
You are a Royal Mail Employee and therefore are entitled to all the advantages you expected to be in place when you joined ...
Overtime is overtime - there is a list to sign called ' Pressure overtime ' in your managers office on which you claim overime on a day to day basis - this is how you get paid for overtime . You claim and the manager is expected to qualify your claim . if this is not being done then you must speak to your union representative. if you are not in the union then more fool you and therefore must persue the claims yourself . stand up and be counted - the manager will give you all sorts of reasons to not pay you overtime and if he/she flatly refuses to pay you then you are fully entitled to refuse to deliver any mail that takes you over your hours - this may be regerded as ' wilfull refusal to deliver your mail ' but believe me you are perfectly within your rights to do this . Talk to an older member of staff or an old union person but .... SERIOUSLY .... JOIN THE UNION .... Because they will sort it out for you - that is their reason for being there .
