Hi, just heard today I got the job! (got some questions tho)
Hi all, I've just discovered and joined this forum. I've just had confirmation that I have the job of 'Postman with occasional driving' :) (for some reason called OPG on my contract???). I'm really pleased but I wanted to ask a question - I've wanted to be a postie for some time but have never felt confident applying because there were never full time hours available and, like everyone, I have a family and a mortgage. I decided to take a chance and go for it and now have a contract till the end of April 2011 for is 24 hours a week. Can anyone tell me what my chances are of being kept on permanently and also of getting regular overtime to make my hours up to at least 40 a week? Thanks in advance everyone. Oh, by the way, I'll be based at Warrington.

Welcome Paul - OPG is the RM term for Postman/Postwoman it means Operational Postal Grade and is a hangover from when we had different grades of Postal Workers - we are all now OPGs.
Regular overtime - depends on your local office but inmost places managers will snap your hand off if your willing to do extra deliveries beyond your contracted hours. BTW Overtime is not paid in RM until you have done 40 hours or more.
Being kept on permanently and or getting a full time contract is also dependant on your office as we are currently going through Modernisation which means a reduction in the overall numbers of staff, but if there are enough voluntarily going you may have a chance. The same with Full Time although in that regard you may have to wait along time, we have RMC members who have been part time for 10 years or more.

Just to qualify what True Blue has said about the overtime
The overtime RATE is not paid until you have done 40 hours or more a week
You will of course be paid for any extra hours you do between your contracted 24 hours and 40 hours (at your contracted hourly rate)
Oh, and make sure YOU enter on the sheets any extra hours you do. DON'T leave it to your Line Manager (aka Lino) or the Delivery Office Manager (aka DOM) to do as they 'sometimes' have a habit of forgetting
