Just joined the forum - I'm a Postman of 11 years from the North East... was unfairly dismissed for a period of 9 months in 2003, so have some experience in the field of enforced unemployment should anyone want any sort of advice... Cheers.

can i ask what the dismissal was for? And if you won at an ET did you get your job back?

Hiya - It was for absence. Although I had 9 absences in a 12 month period which triggered Stages 1, 2 and 3 (all issued) - they were all related to a back problem which I had that eventually required surgery. I was dismissed after I had this surgery due to this poor absence record. My appeal failed, and the Union refused to continue to support me at my upcoming ET, (the Union case assessor thought that my sacking was reasonable). 7 of my 9 absences which led to dismissal were covered by a medical certificate. I was always told that Royal Mail did not accept sicknotes as a valid reason for absence (which I was sure was bollocks), so chose to represent myself at the ET. The ET panel agreed with me, and discounted these absences covered by a sicknote. I was therefore unanimously reinstated back to my exact place of work, with 9 months backpay. I have not been a Union member for the last 7 years.
The DOM left my office shortly afterwards, and i've had no real problems since.
Just a quick postscript.. accidents at work or absences covered by disability should never be counted toward an employees sick record, but continue to be counted by certain managers at Royal Mail, and have led to one or two employees being sacked and reinstated at my office lately... if you happen to have ANY sort of accident whilst on duty, make sure it is logged in the accident book as soon as possible, and be wary of these absences being 'counted' at all Stage Interviews.
