Mail Centre Maintenance Engineers AME's/MSTL's/MTL's

Post by Unleash Hell »

Hello colleagues in this area of the business.

A few questions, firstly about the the Industrial action recently called off. How many offices (Engineers that is), supported it and if so why? Although our staff stayed out, we kind of felt that we were shooting ourselves in the foot, not really understanding what the strike had to do with us. Maybe a good opportunity to renew calls for a seperate Engineers union? Our wishes never really account for anything, perhaps because they're so few of us now. :arrrghhh

My second point/question is ; how long has it been since shift allowances were significantly increased, why don't we receive an additional 'Ad Hoc' allowance if we do an extra shift and why are our O/T rates so poor with respect to our standard hourly rate? (Particularly if you of an S6-S8 grade!!)

Finally, do any offices get decent quality uninterrupted corrective maintenance on their kit? By that I mean not being called to faults every 3 minutes when you're trying to get on with some decent performance work. This could be by way of additional staff on shift, or just that they don't run your offices mech on the early shift..

Thanks for all your replies!!

All of us were out, on the principle that there's not much point being in a union if you don't intend to support it.
Didn't go down too well though when posties worked in the attached DO....

We had that back in the NCU days, but sadly that union was gobbled up by the Tyrannosaurus Rex of the UCW.
Irrelevant now though, as RM won't recognise "another" union.

Blame Engineering 2000 etc for those anomalies, but the union's idea (quite rightly, I think) was to get the basic pay up to a point where O/T wasn't necessary or wanted by most people. Good point though about O/T rates, and they must be due for up-rating.

Early shifts? So little mail now that you can work on whatever you want.....
