Just got start date!

Hi everybody!

I've been on the waiting list for a year and I've finally got my start date; I'm nervous. It's just in time as I found out my wife is pregnant as well on the same day!

Can anyone give me any tips on how to hit the ground running on my first day / week? I'm an OPG (can anyone tell me what this stands for?!?).

Hi and welcome to rmc (and to Royal Mail) wolvesboy84
An OPG is an Operational Postal Grade. If you're working in a Mail Centre you will
be facing and sorting mail most of the time. You should get some basic training
and shown round the Mail Centre when you have your induction.
If you need to know something you should ask the people you are working with,
or come on rmc and ask.
We are going through a difficult peiod at present, and I think Birmingham MC has
already been ballotted and is taking strike action, probably one day a week - I would
contact your Union (CWU) Branch or Rep and join the CWU asap if I were you.

Just been checking and I was wrong - Birmingham MC doesn't seem to have
been ballotted yet, though Birmingham VOC (Vehicle Operation Centre) has.
So you won't be having to cross a picket line. But all CWU members are to
be ballotted in September for Industrial Action, and if the vote is Yes, there
will be national strike action in October, so if you want a vote join the CWU asap.
