Why unions make sense

Post by Lynn Simpson »

Comments that do my head in include:
"I don't believe in unions" and yet these self-righteous non members have no logical reason as to why they do not support an organisation whose sole purpose is to support and represent its members in times of difficulty.
"I don't believe in striking" and yet they cannot give a rational argument as to why ordinary people should not use the only defense they have which is 'the withdrawal of their labour' when they find themselves up against an uncaring and powerful employer who puts profit before the welfare of their employees, cut jobs and wages in real terms in order to meet unattainable targets and who make decisions based on a political ideology that is based on attacking ordinary workers rights and working conditions.
"I think we are well paid for what we do"....Uh??!! Yet they are unable to argue against the fact that it is because of the union and solidarity of members that this is the case. Unionised workforces are better paid because of collectivity and solidarity. By standing together to get decent pay, terms and conditions, we help to raise the bar and standards for the private sector who are more vulnerable.
"But we are lucky to have a job" Employment is not a gift, it is essential for the economy and for the country to operate. Without ordinary workers earning enough money to have a certain amount of disposable income then the economy would collapse.
Decent paid employment = greater purchasing power = creates more jobs = stronger economy
Poor paid employment = hand to mouth and no disposable income = job losses in factories, services and retail = high unemployment = recession = greater austerity measures and cuts in public services = greater stain on welfare system = greater inequality and so it continues

You are right Lynn, but some people just don't seem to get it. Though they are quite happy to take all the union members achieve. :arrrghhh
