Post office closure ‘a slippery slope’

WESTON’S Boulevard Post Office is due to close in one month as bosses look for another site, leading a councillor to voice fears that the move will be a ‘slippery slope’.

The unit, housed at the rear of the McColl’s convenience store, will close on November 30 following the resignation of the current sub-postmaster, which means the site is no longer available for post office use.

The company’s bosses have assured residents the closure is only temporary and are currently looking for a new location for the branch.

But Weston councillor Mike Bell has criticised the move and warned the facility could close for good as part of ‘long-term neglect of Weston’ by postal managers.

He said : “I am really concerned this is the start of a slippery slope.

“Post Office Limited knew this change was likely to be coming at the beginning of the year and it has still failed to prevent closure by finding alternative premises.

“Post Office Limited managers have neglected Weston for too long. The main town post office in Regent Street looks like it will close at any minute.

“The counter staff continue to do a good
job, but for Post Office Limited to allow the Regent Street branch to get into the state it is currently in doesn’t give me much confidence that their promises on the Boulevard hold much water.”

A Post Office Limited spokesman said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of The Boulevard Post Office and wish to reassure customers that we are working hard to restore the service to the community as soon as possible.

“We are committed to maintaining services in the area and are looking into several possible solutions.

“In the meantime, customers can access post office services at nearby branches, including Moorland Road and Milton Road.”

Any residents who want to comment on the closure and alternative arrangements can email consultation@postoffice.co.uk or call phone 08457 223344.
