In an ongoing dispute over job security and pay, the CWU has today (Friday) served formal notice on Post Office Ltd of the union's intention to ballot some 4,000 Post Office staff nationally.
Hard working Post Office staff have been kept waiting since April 2012 for their annual pay rise. After receiving what national official Andy Furey described as the "most appalling pay proposal I have seen in 20 years of being on the union's executive" the decision to ballot for strike action was agreed by the union's National Executive.
Shortly afterwards the Post Office announced their plans to franchise 70 Crown offices in a move that would see the network cut by 20% and put over 700 jobs at risk, giving further impetus for strike action.
Commenting on the importance of delivering a 'yes' vote in the ballot, Andy Furey said: "The Post Office's actions are simply a race to the bottom and all members, including those facing the threat of franchising will ultimately lose out unless we can deliver a good yes vote.
"Voting yes is the only way to guarantee an improved offer in respect of job security and pay. A no vote will mean 770 members being left in limbo in regard to the Post Office's plans for franchising 70 Crown Offices.
"Crown members are owed a consolidated, pensionable pay increase from April 2012. If the Post Office can find £11m for subpostmasters, then it should be able to reward its frontline staff in Crown Offices, who generate significant sales and income. Equally, our Supply Chain / Admin members have received a consolidated pay increase for 2012 and they are due to receive a further 3.25% from 1st April 2013."
Concluding, Andy said: "All we are seeking for our Crown members is parity with other Post Office workers representated by the CWU. Please vote yes."
In a phone poll conducted by The Campaign Company, 92% of respondents were supportive of the union's stance on pay and job security, whilst just over 90% wanted the Union to continue to press for fairness in pay.
Ballot timetable:
Ballot Papers Dispatched - Friday 22nd February
Ballot Papers Returned - Friday 8th March

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
