Release Date: 13/11/2012
Motorists will continue to be able to access DVLA services locally to tax their cars and apply for driving licences after the Secretary of State for Transport today announced DVLA is awarding a new contract to Post Office Limited to provide DVLA’s services from their post office network.
A new seven year contract will run from 1 April 2013 until 31 March 2020, with the option of an extension for up to a further three years. In addition to DVLA services, the contract also gives scope for the winning bidder to provide services to the public for other Government departments.
The current DVLA front office counter services contract is operated by Post Office Limited and is due to expire on 31 March 2013.
Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin said:
“I congratulate the Post Office and am confident they will deliver an excellent service to motorists throughout the country.
"This contract also provides value for money for the taxpayer, resulting in savings of between £13 million and £15 million a year and demonstrates how serious we are about making savings within Government.”
The scope of the contract is for all existing DVLA related Post Office services, such as applying for tax discs and driving licences and some new services currently offered through DVLA local offices, such as the provision of duplicate licences and licensing of Heavy Goods Vehicles.
These additional services will now be available at the Post Office’s network, giving better accessibility to DVLA’s services to motorists.

Fantastic news, a 7 year contract will give a bit of breathing space. Losing the DVLA would have have been disastrous - now let's just hope they roll AEI machines out across the country.

How much does a Sub Postmaster make for each car license sold, and what's an AEI machine ?FinancialSpecialist wrote:Fantastic news, a 7 year contract will give a bit of breathing space. Re: Post Office wins contract to provide DVLA services
It is good news but the Government could not go back on their promise to make the Post Office the shopfront of government services unless they could do it without anybody realising. The Government can't run away and let the Post Office wither because the sub postmasters have run a great campaign and got a lot of people to write to their MPs.
The Government will not risk closing post offices now but they don't want to carry on paying a subsidy for post offices that are not profitable. Therefore, somebody has to pay and the Government have offered the Post Office the chance to become a mutual if Post Office management can make the Post Office network run without a subsidy.
If the Post Office subsidy can be reduced by generating profits from selling other services, all the better but the subsidy must not be reduced by under paying and slave driving vulnerable workers who work away from the public's eye. This would mean that the lowest paid workers in Royal Mail Group would be subsidising something that the whole country should be paying for.
It is totally unacceptable for a mutual to be created that allows anyone working in POL to be paid a higher bonus than anyone else. Paula Vennell's bonus should be the same amount as that of the cleaner who cleans Paula's office.

A big red booth capable of capturing electronic portraits, signatures, and, I believe, finger prints. In our place it is used for Driving Licence renewals, but the potential for other uses is obvious.Lounge Lizard wrote:what's an AEI machine ?

Vulnerable workers must not be exploited to achieve POL management's objective of making the Post Office self sufficient so that POL management can rake in the bonus money that will be enshrined in the mutualisation agreement. :dcfo :ncfo :vcfo

Re: Post Office wins contract to provide DVLA services
How much does a Sub Postmaster make for each car license sold,
About 63p a disc.
Following a ball breaking competitive tender process (according to POL) fees charged for processing car tax will have taken a big hit. Rumours have it the new fee for issuing a tax disc will fall to around 20p. There will be new DVLA work, but due to its "hands on" nature e.g. form filling, interviewing, data capture etc etc, this work will have to be directed to larger PO's such as Crowns and larger Subs. Fee prices as yet unknown, so Subbies are not exactly jumping for joy, and Lin.......Postcard campaign by the NFSP, making a difference, total bollocks.
OJEC tendering rules cannot be influenced by outside protest, its all down to the scoring procedures ask Mr Branson
