THE Post Office has revealed plans to axe 300 head office managers.
Details emerged as the government was expected to unveil plans today for Royal Mail Group to be broken up and sold off.
Union leaders claim the job cuts leave more than 900 staff living in fear as they are forced to leave or fight it out for 600 posts.
Brian Scott at Unite said: “We believe the decision to threaten redundancy was being driven by an agreement between the government and Royal Mail boss Moya Greene.”
In letters seen by the Mirror, HR director Debbie Moore claims the cuts were to “create a viable and sustainable Post Office business for the future”.
The ConDems are to reveal in today’s Postal Services Bill plans for tackling the firm’s £310billion pension deficit. The PO said it was talking to Unite.

Re: Post Office axe 300 HQ jobs
Firstly I'm certain that the pension deficit figure should read 10 billion and not 310 billion.
Having cleared that one up let me say a huge HOORAY that those time wasting, morale sapping, salary stealing SEMs have at last been found out! My only criticism is that it's taken over three years for our alleged senior managers to realise that these people are a total and complete waste of space. The damage that these charlatans have done in crown offices is immeasurable and if I never see a SEM in my office again then it will be too soon.
Their non-accountability together with their incomprehensible belief that good conversations will save POL has driven me mad over the last few years but with any luck, the huge reduction in numbers should mean that I never have to share the same postcode with a SEM ever again!
On a more sinister note however, I don't like the way in which compulsory redundancies are being talked about as part of this exercise. It has always been a proud boast of RMG that compulsory redundancies have been avoided but I suppose this goes to show what a dire (and worsening) mess we are in.
The end is indeed nigh methinks!

Before we get too excited, I have heard that the teams responsible for Service and Efficiency, and Retail Standards are to be disbanded. A cause for celebration?

S&E are stuck with a crap OM and we suffer for it. Personally, I'll be glad when they've gone..
It's what devil they bring in that worries me more...

BM's are apparently going to do the work that Service and Efficiency used to do that relates to duties. The way it has been explained to me is that it is something that I want, and that I am best placed to do it.The BFO wrote:Before we get too excited, I have heard that the teams responsible for Service and Efficiency, and Retail Standards are to be disbanded. I don't know how long you have been around old chap, but I've lost count of the number of times this business has gone centralisation to decentralisation and vice versa. I suspect that many of the new breed of Branch Managers would not have a clue how to write a set of duties, but then I suppose neither did I once upon a time.bigjames wrote:BM's are apparently going to do the work that Service and Efficiency used to do that relates to duties. Re: Post Office axe 300 HQ jobs
Does anybody know if those bone idle sods on 'gardening leave' will be getting their comeuppance under this wave of redundancies?
Goodness knows how much help some of them could have been over the summer assisting in crown offices in one way or another. (Instead of addling their brains with daytime television).
Still...senior management know best...I only work here!

Re: Post Office axe 300 HQ jobs
As one of the 'new breed', I do take some umbrage with that. I cant speak for all of us newer recruits, but I have met a few of them.I don't know how long you have been around old chap, but I've lost count of the number of times this business has gone centralisation to decentralisation and vice versa. I suspect that many of the new breed of Branch Managers would not have a clue how to write a set of duties, but then I suppose neither did I once upon a time.
My background prior to the PO was management up to Area level and if i am totally honest, could probably write a set of duties one hell of a lot better than S&E - especially if we didn't have to mollycoddle some staff members. And before anyone jumps down my throat for that last comment, most managers, staff and anyone with a modicum of sense will know that,as a business, we do over protect a minority of staff members.
Reverting to my main reason for reply, writing a set of duties is not rocket science. As a business, we could - should - learn from some of us 'new breed'. Perhaps, just perhaps, there are things we can add to this business to improve it.
As that was my first umbrage reply - I now await the flack back for whatever reasons you can think of...

My precise quote, which you have helpfully highlighted, was that many of the new breed would struggle.
It is possible that you are not one of them. Welcome to the Forum by the way - I look forward to hearing more.

Re: Post Office axe 300 HQ jobs
It appears that the VR terms on which the SEMs are getting are pretty shite.
Enhanced - Something along the line of the old VR terms.
Standard - This is apparently what ALL VRs will be based on in the future. 1 weeks pay to every year worked...
Good news on the 'trailer' front that I hope some of you are following here:

I've got chummy with the REM guys who come to us and they will drop the coinbags straight into me Cortina/trailer combo when the time comes.
Now that's solidarity...

Re: Post Office axe 300 HQ jobs
About 2 months short of 25 years is the answer, and yes I have seen many changes with our 'Head Office' moving around the country on a regular basis and the 'support' functions providing less and less each time they move. Although to be fair to them, it is usually because there is increasingly less of them, if that makes sense! The BFO wrote:I don't know how long you have been around old chap, but I've lost count of the number of times this business has gone centralisation to decentralisation and vice versa. There is no secret to writing duties, just a long list of things you have to bear in mind - Family Friendly Duties, Part-Time Contracts, Tea Breaks after 2.5 hours etc etc. Writing duties is relatively easy, in theory, in practice we lack the one thing that will make the process easier - the 'right' number of people, and I don't mean the number generated by an S&E laptop, I am talking about the actual number of real clerks needed to service the number of people who walk through the door. If we had that number of staff, the duties would almost write themselves, the queues would move, the customers and staff would be happier, and we could even actually sell some of our products to customers prepared to listen, instead of the angry mob we often face now.

Well said big james.
It all seems so easy when you put it like that doesn't it?
Enough staff and happy customers; are they not the two best ideas you've heard in a long time? Shame our senior managers don't agree really isn't it?
Roll on March 2011!
