Read recently that TESCO are seriously preparing to open up some TESCO BANKS and IF that's... IF Royal Mail want to make cash and keep every Postmen in a job then the WAY FORWARD is to have a Post Bank, with the silly money of PROFITS that Banks make year in year out - it'd take a few years to replace the Pension defecit every employee would have their Jobs SAFE-GUARDED and the Future would look a lot brighter..

The Unite union has reacted angrily to HSBC's plans to cut 1,700 jobs in the UK including all 750 staff in Southend.

The bank's Essex headquarters at the Victoria Centre in the town is to close at the end of next year.

Credit card and debt collection services currently based in Southend are to be consolidated in Birmingham over the next 12 months.

Unite said it was "appalled" that HSBC could axe staff who have "contributed to £3bn half-year profits".

'Crucial asset'

The job losses will affect four main sites in England: Southend, Southampton, Leicester and Sheffield, although HSBC has said it will create "several hundred new roles" in Birmingham.

Unite's national officer, Rob MacGregor, said: "Unite is appalled that HSBC is choosing to cut a further 1,700 staff from across the UK.

"HSBC needs to urgently reconsider its strategy.

"At a time of strong market performance by HSBC, they should not be cutting their most crucial asset, the staff that have contributed to £3bn half-year profits."

HSBC's UK head Paul Thurston has described the job cuts as an "essential part of the streamlining of our business".

LLOYDS TSB announced today that it is to axe 370 jobs.
The cuts are expected to affect departments across the UK including Wealth and International, Group Operations and Group Executive operations.

The decision was condemned by union Unite who said that today's announcement means the banking giant has
ADVERTISEMENTnow cut over 15,000 jobs over the past 12 months.

Unite said it was optimistic that the fresh cuts would be achieved through voluntary redundancies or transfers.

The union said it was a "bleak day" for finance staff who had faced many months of uncertainty.

National officer Rob MacGregor said: "The staff who have been told they face an uncertain future will be devastated by these announcements."

The union said Lloyds had now announced more than 15,000 job losses over the past year.

Mr MacGregor said: "Unite has been working with Lloyds to minimise the number of redundancies at the bank as a result of the integration of Lloyds and HBOS businesses. The union is optimistic that Lloyds will continue to work with us to identify all possible options of alternative employment for staff."

Unite has been calling for a commitment of no compulsory redundancies, and said work which had been offshored over the years should be brought back to the UK.

The latest Lloyds cuts will hit the Wealth & International, Group Operations and Group Executive operations across the UK, said Unite

Don't forget that the Post Office did have its own bank, National Girobank, set up by Tony Benn in the late 1960s but sold off by Thatcher to Alliance and Leicester.

Well there must be plenty of MONEY to be made if TESCO are sniffing about... Most of these banks are F*CKED because the greedy b*stards that run them are away buying or taking over Banks/Businesses all over the world. RM would solely be a British based Bank and i'd be happy if they were restricted from buying/investing in foriegn businesses.

Precisely - which is what I find so amusing about these repeated documents we receive about a ‘Postbank’. It isn’t going to happen, and if it did, the Tories would sell that as well.

Alan Cook said in his submission to the Business and Enterprise Select Committee last year that The Bank of Ireland would be creating a Current Account for use at Post Offices this year.

I have long thought that anything that the Post Office is successful at is taken away from us. Then they wonder why we don't make a profit!
