What happens when a branch closes? Do you just leave all your unwanted counter bulletins, focuses and junk collected over the years for someone else to clear up ( since duties have no time for anything but sitdown and serve thesedays ) or do they pay you extra to clear out all the sheves, cupboards etc? and what will happen to that really posh plasma tv screen high up on the wall - does it work? has anyone seen stuff on it? are do we draw lots to take it home? where does the arial go? we can't find any holes! (we could have neighbours on!)
Anyone who has been through this? we would like to know what to expect! or is it a case of last one out switch off the light? :Confused

Squeaky,
A very good question!
My previous conversion took place on-site, so we shut on the Saturday, and the franchise opened in the same place on the Monday. I have people working for me who used to work at Hammersmith, which was one of the original WHSmiths 6. From what I can gather, all the stock and cash is picked up by a REM van after the final audit, but as for the rest of the stuff, no-one seems sure. Inventories have already started to be made of things like counter pedestals, and it is hard to imagine a situation where expensive kit like the infamous plasma screes are left behind. Stuff like old cash accounts is archived, I know that much, but all the other paperwork will presumably have to be thrown away. Office furniture will be put into storage, and kit like note counters etc will be stored and then issud out when requests for new kit are put in assuming it hasn't already been blagged by local offices! Horizon kit will obviously all be taken away.
I have to be honest, I have already started clearing stuff out, and we don't go until September. I learned from bitter experience last time that you have to crack on with it early or you will run out of time!
If/when I get any definitive schedules etc I will stick them on.

Had our first site meeting today with the man from the conversion team. He went through a few procedures and timescales as to what will happen with the office prior to and at the time of conversion.
Apparently it is business as usual up until the last day, at which time we balance as normal, at the usual time. All stock and cash will be remmed off in pouches from each individual till. There will only be an audit if the audit team or the BM has any concerns. People from the Implementation Team will visit the office prior to the conversion to inventory all assets within the office, and by assets I mean any electrical equipment with an asset number, such as PC's printer/faxes etc, it will also include all desks, office furniture, note counters and the like. Any cupboards or shelves that are deemed to be unusable or not in a condition to be easily renovated to a good standard will be dumped. Plasma screens will be removed by the contractors that installed them (nice work if you can get it) and stored or re-used. All assets worth keeping will be removed and stored, or relocated to be re-used if there is a obvious and known need. Counter chairs will be removed and stored. Horizon kit will be removed and stored, ready to be re-used. Any items purchased under Front-line Fix belong to the office and should be disposed of in a manner to be decided by the office. Anything left behind when the contractors attend to clear the office will be remove or dumped.
Operations manuals will be passed on o WHSmiths, along with datestamps if they don't say 'BO' after the name of the office and the asylum seeker terminal.
Sensitive waste will have to be removed prior to the conversion, along with any general rubbish. Transactional stores (forms etc) should be run down, but not to a level where we run out.
There were loads of other bits and pieces, but they were largely specific to my office.
Any questions just drop us a post! and I will do my best to provide an answer!

As far as I am aware that is indeed the case, so people who do more docket will bump up their final payout. The qualifying period is being looked at in light of the new pay deal, because Saturday Premium is assessable, so if it is removed, then offices that convert next year will be disadvantaged. The thinking is they might stretch it to a year to cover periods when Saturday Premium was paid.
Hope this helps.
