Datestamp Trish wrote:I don't know what the future holds but then I am not making negative predictions and quoting them as facts. I do know that the business are stating that there current strategy for the network is not a 'Closure programme' but a transformation and that they are keen to 'build' not 'dismantle'. Although this is still ambiguous it still should give some reassurance. At present the CWU and POL are in Crown Transformation talks and this is still work in progress and therefore there is nothing to tell whilst these are ongoing. This is normal practice in negotiations.

With regards TUPE this has not changed anything as the business could have taken executive action before and attempted to slash wages but they would have had a unionised workforce to contend with. This has not changed as with TUPE, the union takes recognition rights over also. The safest guard to your terms and conditions is a strong union and that is what we have in the CWU.
Trish there is little point. Royalmailwhinge doesn't want to hear anything other than negative predictions, what you are saying falls on deaf ears. They are even designing a new banner for the homepage "Abandon all hope ye who enter here", it will set out the expectations for what is to follow pretty clearly.

It seems that the majority of those who search out this forum do so because of some gripe in their office which they want to seek information about anonymously. This is I imagine what the forum was designed for, not for the onslaught of doom merchants who have made it their home.

There are some intelligent, well reasoned arguments about what might happen, from 2 or 3 users. The rest simply applaud any negativity, moan or complaint, sometimes with a bit of racism or the like thrown in for good measure. If you go against the grain you are accused of being the establishment.

The one thing that keeps me going is the fact that I know that this forum is not representative of the Post Office staff at large and in fact I think my branch colleagues would be equally disappointed at the comments on here. I am not an optimist, I am a realist and have worked for other businesses where conditions were worse and upper management were just as out of touch with the front line staff.

The difference in the Post Office seems to be that many have worked for the company for all of their professional lives and their only frame of reference is their rose tinted spectacles and the pre sales culture.

I admire your enthusiasm old chap, time will tell. My concern is that the 'gloss and positivity' masks the underlying and continuing erosion of pay and working conditions. I am happy for those who believe to go along with it, but I am a self confessed pessimist, and actually proud of it. Look what undiluted optimism has done for Greece, Ireland, and so forth. And, by the way, what institution played a large part in wrecking the lives of many Irish people? The Bank of Ireland...

You're right, Running Man, it all seems very placid. Time was when I couldn't resist coming on hear nearly every night and howling with laughter at some of the comments and satire! Now I even have to reply to my own thread about Post & Go!

Now, re. the September issue above. Any chance of VR coming our way? :pray

And in an attempt to start off a bit of meaty discussion, has anybody got a clue what all this 'Post Office Story' thing is about?
I gather it's something about feeling positive as I wait for the AEI to reboot, whilst unjamming yet another defective counter printer... Or is it just the management consultants who flogged the concept to the PO who are feeling positive about their fee?
Still, it gets the boss out of the office for a day every month and gets him a nice ride out on the train and some free tea and biscuits.

I think it's a communications exercise to make us feel warm and cosy, and to counteract we naughty negative questioning types. In our office there has been no structured communication on this, only the occasional reference on the excellent Focus TV that assumes we know what they are talking about. Similarly, these 'Ambassador' things are a mystery. As far as I am aware these had been in existence for over a year before our Branch Manager happened to mention the role (I think as a slip of the tongue) in a training session. What do they do? What is the point? Not a clue.

It's not just me then that doesn't really 'get' what the Post Office Story is really about and what it is going to do for front-line staff?

It worries me that I don't understand it, nobody at work either and I would guess nobody on this forum does. Yet every few weeks the company spend £000's that we haven't got sending managers/ambassadors to expensive hotels to events about it.
There's a very poor cost/benefit ratio here.

If anybody in authority is snooping, here's a list of things you could spend the cash on that would actuallymake clerks feel happier:
-New counter printers, ours are worn out museum pieces.
-Some new Horizon base units with processors less than ten years old. Only the Voyager spacecraft must have older chips that we are using.
-The ability to send 68p stamps when I order them without waiting 4 weeks.
-The ability to increase the order for presentation packs on standard issue; we've asked 4 times over 3 years without success.
-Reinstating the slot that reads gas cards on Horizon.
-Some decent counter chairs. The latest batch seem to have more knobs than ever but seem impossible to adjust to a comfortable setting. I have literally sat on more comfortable wooden stools.
-A skip to put the Post & Go machine in (and the chairs and the photo booth).

Unlike the consultants the PO have employed I'll even waive my fee if they will make a donation to the RNLI! Get all these implemented and even I will become as optimistic as FSS

All those crown office staff worrying about their future should be looking to buy their own post office, and show us amateurs how to run a business profitably and successfully.
